I hate being tied down to a schedule when we are on vacation. I'm going to make a few adr's but I'm hoping we can still get in a few places last min. When we went sept 2010 we were able to make an ADR for beirgarten last min... Do you think that will still be possible? Thanks!

They are recommened, I guess not definitely needed but its better to have them anyway. September is during the free dining plan, so restaurants tend to be busy. The less popular ones, you could probably get into last minute, but I highly doubt you would get into any popular restaurants the day of.

With it being free dining, I personally, wouldn't take a chance on it.

I'd recommend reservations. You may be more 'tied down' but in the end will probably spend less time waiting for openings to happen or being turned away from restaurants you want to enjoy.

If you stick with ADR for restaurants that do not require the new credit card hold, then you will not be penalized or charged if you do not show up. The "no show" charge is for the more popular restaurants and all character meals.

Generally, there will always be some places available on any given day, but it might not be where you are or where you want to eat. If you're really flexible about location and time, then you could probably get by without an ADR. (My guess is that you'll have better luck at non-park venues and if you eat at off times.)

However, if you really want to eat at a specific location and/or at a specific time, then you should make an ADR. As others have said, it is during FD, which means TS restaurants will be busy. I would rather know when/where I'm eating than wondering if I'm going to have end up somewhere low on my list of choices.

We went during FD last year and there were restaurants you could get into last minute. But, ITA, if there is anywhere you don't want to miss then make an ADR so you aren't disappointed.

have gone during September the last several year, during Free Dining every time.... 4 years ago it was hard to get in anywhere at the last minute during free dining promo. However, after the economy tanked, the last 3 years they were taking walk-ups at virtually every place we went to. I think the fact they quit giving away extras as compensation for people who couldn't get into table-service restaurants during free dining shows you that there was availability in many places. If you're not real picky, or willing to eat at off-times you'll easily get in to a lot of places (like 11:30 or 2:30 lunches...dinner at 5:30 or 9:00 PM)

That said, if there are specific, popular restaurants like character meals or 'ohana or le cellier, that you really, really want to go to then you better get ADRs.
