Please if you have these toys take them away immediately!!!

A big toy recall, and this time it is not because of lead. A strange and dangerous chemical reaction has the government urging the immediate recall of 4 million boxes of Aqua Dots.

They are one of the most popular selling toys with little beads that join together with water. They're colorful and even look like candy, but swallow them, and they can cause seizures, unconsciousness, and even death.

The problem is in the coating that makes the beads stick together. When ingested, the chemicals can metabolize to create a reaction similar to a date rape drug.

The government has received two reports of children slipping into a comatose state. Both have fully recovered. The toys are sold at mass merchandisers nationwide like Toys-R-Us and Costco.

The company says to remove all Aqua Dots immediately. For the company's contact number or more information on the recall, click on the link: http://www.aquadotsrecall.com

I saw this on the news this morning too. DD has a set and is not happy about the recall. However, after explaining to her what could happen she was ok.

This was #1 on DD's Chirstmas list. I told her about the "poison", she is bummed.

This was DD's favorite present from her birthday last week -- she is sad about losing it, too, but understands. The recall site mentions possible replacement dots, though, so we are hoping that those will become available.

It is getting so hard to know what is safe to buy!

BAMB, I was thinking that too.. Christmas might be clothes, movies, and such just not many toys... Most of my munchkins are out of the toy stage but we try to make sure the youngest has at least one big toy... so far he hasn't mentioned those...

However, my little guy I watch that is 3 wants them...and I told him NO way... He said he'll tell his mommy that I said no..and she'll get them.. So I sent her the news link.. she said NO too!

I don't know, I really could get on my soapbox about companies moving over seas to save money.

Do we as a society care so little since everything is disposable?? I can't fathom that people find this acceptable.

I would rather pay $40 for something that is safe and won't be destroyed in 2 minutes the pay $5 for crap that could kill my kids.

The US has high standards for things made here, we should have high standards for things imported here too.

PREACH ON B&MB! I agree 100%!

The news is supposed to have a story tonight about a group of CT moms that are going to demand some changes about the way toys are made. I'm going to Tivo it since we are going to be at school.

I too would rather pay more knowing it is safe.

This will be a very lean toy Christmas this year. My youngest has picked out his three toys, my eldest doesn't want toys. He wants to save the $$ for the museum. That will be our gift this year. A museum membership for the family.

Okay, I don't have kiddos so can anyone tell me "safe" companies before I go and buy stuff for my niece and nephew?

I think right now no one is safe. Basically avoid anything made over seas. Which of course takes out the major toy companies like Mattel, Fisher Price, etc.. How old are the kids? Old enough not to put things in their mouths?

Yep, now not only do you have to find a toy..but you have to read where it was made to make the wise decision...

Back to Basics Toys has a listing of the toys they sell that are US or EU made. (EU has some pretty strict standards too)
They aren't cheap, but the adage is true, you get what you pay for.

meant to say thanks for the catalog, DH and I are going to get the robots for the boys. DS11 said that old toys are way cooler than the new stuff!!!:thumbsup2

I also used to buy from Hearth Song...wooden toys, and old fashioned things. Some of the toys I used to get there were favorites for years. They have some great outdoor toys too. Not sure if they state where made though.
