DH's friend invited us to his wedding in LI, NY. It is on Sun afternoon. What is an appropriate gift for us to attend?

We got married on a Sunday afternoon, it was 17 years ago so I'm not sure if things have changed but we got standard wedding gifts. Mostly cash and then the remainder was things off our registry.

how does the date and time of a wedding change the type of gift you provide?

I think it depends more on where the reception is taking place rather than the day of the week. I personally give more if it is in a fancy hall, rather than at a park..... But, in the end, I always give a cash gift.

Maybe it's because LI is 'cover your plate' territory, and a Sunday afternoon wedding is cheaper?

"cover your plate" plus a little extra depending on the closeness of the relationship...

Ahhh, gotcha! :goodvibes

Our wedding was not a huge amount less for being on a Sunday, but yes, it was a bit cheaper. However that was a long time ago and far from LI where we went to a wedding last year and I know, they are expen$ive, so that could be very different in this situation.

We're planning on a cash gift, but not sure how much, so I'm providing the criteria. In NY, recommended cash gifts can vary based on relationship, venue, date, etc. I used weddingenvelope.com, and it said 190. Double checking here- would give 200 if that's correct.

Give what you can afford and feel good about giving regardless of the place or the time. Just go the wedding and share the couple's day.

My best friend got married in her backyard in an afternoon wedding. My husband's coworkers kid got married on a Sat night in a big fancy place. I gave my best friend a bigger gift.

I tried out that wedding calculator. It said someone who is unemployed and traveled 350 miles to attend the wedding should give $175. YIKES.

I just did the wedding calculator for a wedding we attended last weekend. We live in WI and do a combo of cash/gift.

It said we should have given $350. Holy cow. That is almost my food budget for the month. :rotfl:

Oh, dear! I just tried that calculator and was horrified! I am in Texas (NOT Long Island) where we are not known to give the big bucks for weddings. I answered the questions and chose a Saturday wedding, less than 100 miles away, said that I had attended a pre-wedding event (meaning bridal shower--you know, I already gave a gift), etc... It says I should bring $215 as my gift. Sorry! Not happening. That kind of money is saved for my twenty nieces and nephews when they marry (as 4 of them have). I am NOT giving that for a wedding where I don't know the bride, haven't seen the groom in years but still stay in contact with his parents. Nope! I disagree with the calculator on this one!!!

*laughs* Wow, just WOW. Put in the info for my BIL's wedding this fall. It came up with $335. Uhm.... No.

$250-$300

:lmao::rotfl::lmao::rotfl:

Wait, were you serious?? :confused3

I don't think I've ever in my entire life given more than $100 as a wedding gift (and that was for my sisters).

That amount of money is ridiculous for a wedding gift.
