Appropriate clothing for 10th grade boy?

My son is also in 10th grade here. He wears mostly shorts and tshirts - even in the winter. He buys clothes usually from Hollister, American Eagle and Aeropostale (they are the main stores in the mall around here so that's mostly where kids here go to shop). He has some polo shirts but doesn't wear them too often. When he wears pants it is jeans - skinny fit. He is on the cross country team at school so when he changes after school you will find him in athletic shorts and shirts. On most days he wears sneakers.

My ds is a junior this year (16) and he wears jeans and tees, we got most of his clothes at Hollister and A&F. His jeans are either just straight or skinny straight jeans which are not tight, they're just fitted on my ds. He wears hollister tees (reg & v-neck), a&f tees and sport team tees. He has a few button down shirts that he wears with the sleeves cuffed. He has some polos too but he hates wearing them He has a bunch of sport team hoodies and solid color hoodies he wears. He wears Nike high tops, he has a pair of mid/low Lebron's and a pair of all white low Adidas. All summer he's pretty much lived in Nike basketball shorts, white tees and his mid calf socks with his Adidas or Nike slides. FWIW in our area no one calls any of this "ghetto", not sure how any of this would be considered that. Most of my ds's friends wear the same things, fitted jeans hanging off their butts, hollister tees.

Hollister/AF/AE- are all "preppy" (my words...I don't know if they have a name for that style now). It's the mids that they call ghetto here. I do see the athletes wear them, but---well, I guess it is hard to explain if you aren't from the area. Funny how all areas are different in style! My kids go to urban schools, maybe that is the difference?!

I have seen my share of boxer shorts when I pick the kids up from school. I hate that look- the jeans hanging down below their butts. I thought for sure that would die down eventually, but seems to be still going strong...

Our high school kids are wearing the jeans and tshirts look along with the athletes who wear the under armour shirts with the long shorts, calf socks and addidas sliders. Thakfully our public school district has a dress code that strictly forbids any boxer shorts or underwear showing above pants and jeans must be on your waist or hip WITH a belt. Shorts/skirts have to be fingertip length. Also, no spaghetti straps, tank tops, etc.

My DS is in the 12th grade and all he has worn in the past few years is Under Armour/Nike/Adidas t-shirts and athletic shorts, occasionally he will wear cargo shorts. I used to try and get him to dress a little nicer (polos and khakis) but when I took a look at all of the other kids in his school I realized that is how they all dress. Even in the winter it has to be absolutely freezing for them to put on jeans and forget about a coat. I've seen most of the girls wear cute North Face jackets but the boys mostly wear hoodies. The only time my DS will wear a coat is if he is going skiing.

Sounds exactly like my DS17 -- except that he will throw on sweatpants in the winter. He has to walk from where he parks to the school (about 5 min) -- but still no jacket

DS's school principal is VERY serious about their dress code which forbids sagging pants for boys. Violators are made to spend the day in their (rather unfashionable) school-issued gym uniform. You see tons of them coming out of school wearing that during the first couple of weeks (why do the same kids test the same boundaries every year??) but the message gets through pretty quickly. I love that principal!!

Primarily black kids & their white friends. Since we're 99% white here, no I don't see it much. .

I really don't know how to say this without being offensive, so here it goes: the kids around here call that style "ghetto".

My 9th grade son dresses just like that mwthf. On Wednesdays he has to dress in business interview clothes for his school dress code. He learned how to tie a tie this week.

Ah, some interesting responses on the black socks.

I researched it a little bit and here's what I came up with. (Saw this same answer many places.) Turns out it's been a trend for almost 20 years, started in Michigan! Who knew! (Personally not a big fan and neither is DS. When I think of black socks I think of old men with seersucker shorts and loafers! )
