Appropriate Breakfast Foods to Maintain Energy??

DH and I will be making our first trip to Disney in July (first trip together, I have been before but it's been almost 15 years ago!). We are in our mid twenties, diabetic, but for the most part, in good health. In April we went to the Cincy Zoo, and this past weekend we went to Thunder over Louisville. Both were very sunny warm days, and we spent them in direct sunlight. And my energy was zapped! I know it's important to drink lots of water, I can handle that, but does anyone have any suggestions for foods for breakfast that won't make us feel "blah" and so forth? I guess basically I think the sun might do that for us, so I want to make sure food doesn't make it a double wammy! Any suggestions? I know we can go to the room to take naps each day, but I'm just trying to make the most of our days at Disney!

I've found that even though I love pancakes/french toast, I do much better with eggs. And I try to have some fruit midday, then a decent but light lunch. Plenty of water. Then, a nice, sit down, table service meal in the evening. You really need that to refuel, and the AC is wonderful. Just don't eat too heavily at night.
The other thing I always do now in the hot/humid weather is to wear a hat. And I usually don't wear tank tops....the short sleeved teeshirts keep the sun off your shoulders.

I dont know much about being diabetic but shredded wheat works best for me. It keeps me going all morning without snacking.

I have seen a number of nutritionists and endocrinologists in my day (thyroid stuff) and they have all had very similar opinions in regard to food combinations throughout the day to keep energy up. Rule of thumb seems to be a high protein breakfast (like the former poster wrote - eggs are great!) with a little bit of carbs - a piece of toast or fruit. A mid-morning snack (fruit and raw nuts are great), a lunch with a combo of protein, fat and the majority of your carbs for the day (a turkey sandwich with a salad perhaps) a mid-afternoon snack (cheese stick, fruit and yogurt) and then a dinner of lean protein and veggies (stay away from pastas, lots of bread, rice, etc.) Also, in general, keeping caffeine, refined sugar and refined flour to a minimum. I find when I do this, it works like a charm!! Is it hard to do in WDW. Yes and no!! I find WDW does offer a LOT of healthy options, but, boy oh boy, is it hard to steer clear of those Dole Whips and Mickey Bars!!! I do think that protein at breakfast is key to the energy and filling you up enough so the temptation does stay away a little bit! Hey, it is vacation after all, right!!???

I have always read that a good protein at breakfast (eggs) is a great help! Also, drink your water and try to stay away from the sodas. I saw the mention of Cincy Zoo, where are u from? DH and I are in Northern KY and the zoo is just north of us. :) Have a great trip!

We are in central KY, in Danville. Hello neighbor! We go to the zoo almost every year with my sister, her husband, and my two nephews.

Anyone have any suggestions for breakfast that could be ate in the room? I'm not sure that we will actually do this, but incase we order some groceries or pack some from home, any suggestions? I think I will buy some little packages of peanuts to take into the park to snack on mid-morning.

Thanks for your suggestions! Anyone else?

I have no idea how this will work out, but we're going to give it a shot. At home, my wife and I often drink chocolate protein shakes for breakfast. Not SlimFast, but I guess the concept is the same. Our kids like them too. Anyway, we're planning on packing our blender in a box that we're checking with our luggage so we can make shakes in the morning. I still think it seems a little crazy, but that's the way we're leaning. We'll just pick up some milk at the shop to make the shakes.

I need a protein in the morning or I am a tired cranky wreck. (Needed and will use the thyroid nutrition post from above.) Depending on your accomodations and ability to get groceries one or more of the breakfast's I've eaten may work for you. Breakfast casserole made at home (whole grain or sprouted grain bread layered with cheese and low fat sausage - pour egg mixture over it and bake) then frozen for the drive to WDW - DH, DD, DS eat this cold out of the fridge/cooler. Quinoa instant cereal from the healthfood store in apple flavor - it's a whole grain that is much more protein than carb and is made just like instant oatmeal with only hot water. (try it at home first as it has a different taste - apple is most similar to oatmeal packets) Brown and serve sausage heated in a foil pouch on the hot plate portion of the in-room coffee maker. Eggs hard boiled in the hot pot I bought at Target for $9.95. Lean pockets with egg filling cooked in microwave in efficiency. (I've heard that some have done this in microwaves at All Star resorts, but I've never tried. We usually have a cooler/fridge and hotpot with us.) Nut butter on a slice of sprouted grain bread. Sprouted grain bread is in most grocery freezers now and is very hearty and counts as protein rather than carb per some diets. Hope something here helped. I enjoyed my own reminders of what to pack for breakfast :teeth:

I have MS and I fall to pieces pretty quickly if I don't eat regularly. At WDW - especially in summer when it's really hot, I always eat a hearty breakfast before hitting the parks. I have to.

I've found doing the eggs/sausage/toast thing works best for me. And some fruit. Buffets are great, because you can grab a little of everything.

Drink tons of water and keep refueling throughout the day with snacks. It's absolutely essential during the heat and humidity and all the walking.

And REST breaks. It's good for the body and the mind. :sunny:

Perhaps you could try peanut butter spread on apple slices. I've never tried this, but perhaps you could try boiling an egg in your disney cup with hot water from the food court. Also, there is a microwave in the food courts, so perhaps you could cook an egg in the microwave. I too am on a very restricted diet- no grains what-so-ever, so I am looking at various options. I know they sell cheese and fruit plates in the food courts. :goodvibes

We've done well with little oatmeal packets, fruit (apple or banana) and low-fat cottage cheese. The water for your oatmeal can be made with the coffee maker. This is also assuming you have a fridge for some cheese (cottage or other). If you don't have a fridge, we get the Borden Light Laughing Cow cheese that doesn't have to be refrigerated and smear it on apple slices.

I can handle an eggs/sausage/bacon breakfast once in a while, but it tears our stomachs up to eat that day after day. I also have high cholesterol, so unless there's Egg Beaters, which is rare, I try not to tempt myself.

Our first order of business once we check in to our hotel is a grocery store run. Usually DH does it while I unpack.

For us, we seem to have trouble finding fiber on vacation! We don't care for fiber supplements, so the apple with the skin, two per day, gives us about 15 grams of fiber :)

I don't know how these will work for diabetics, but there's a newer product by Quaker called Breakfast Cookies. Highly portable, very high in fiber, and they are very filling. They are a SmartSpot food (some good for you food list, low fat, high fiber, etc).

I eat one most days during the week as I'm on WW and try to get the most bang for my breakfast without having to make actual breakfast foods. They come in Oatmeal Raisin and Apple Cinnamon and I eat one in the am (around 7:30) and am good until almost noon most days!

Got two boxes packed, along with some natural applesauce, so at least we'll be doing ok for the breakfast meals!

HTH!

I've been told that an apple will help wake you up more then caffeine/coffee. I don't drink coffee so I don't have anything to compare it to though. I would eat something else in addition to this though... ;)

I agree with Marthasor. Protein at breakfast and lunch is very important, combined with perhaps whole grain toast or bread. Nuts and raisins or fruit is great for a snack. I did a 60 k walk called The Weekend To End Breast Cancer last year and what I noticed was that the walk organizers provided different snacks that we could choose from depending on our circumstances at the time. For example, if I was really dragging I had half a banana or an orange and some trail mix. The fruit was an almost instant 'upper' and the trail mix has sustainability. Our days were really hot, too, and I tended to eat things like beef jerky and nuts periodically throughout the day as I was drinking tons of water and I find if I don't replace sodium once in a while I get dizzy and headachy and miserable. Most importantly - it's your vacation ! Have a treat if you want it but I find it doesn't affect me negatively quite so much if, for example I have a Mickey head ice cream as dessert at lunch rather than as a snack on it's own midway through the afternoon. Try to eat 'good stuff' 90 % of the time and save the other 10 % for treats. Enjoy !!!

I decided to try my own advice and cook an egg in a disney cup. It didn't work. :rotfl2: I suppose if you like really soft eggs it would be ok, but not for my taste. I heated up the cup, put 2 large eggs in and dumped hot water on top. I put the lid on. Half an hour later, I tried one, but it was really runny. Maybe with small eggs it would cook better, of perhaps only one egg at a time. :) Anyway, then I tried cooking an egg in my microwave. I put an egg in a silicone muffin cup, so it wouldn't stick. I forgot to break the yolk  , so of course it exploded. Oh, the things I try for my fellow dissers.

Not to get too personal but you didn't mention if you were taking insulin. Due to your ages, I think you may be Type 1 and therefore are using insulin. You might want to get the opinion of your health care worker but this is just my input.

I am Type 2 and while in WDW, for breakfast in the room I ate a whole grain bagel with peanut butter. I also had an apple with that. I did not use any regular insulin in the morning but used my long acting as usual. You are walking soooo much -- take that into consideration.

One morning I decided to have a breakfast bar too -- very sweet -- and took a little regular -- and boy was I sorry. I enjoyed the Mickey Ice Cream I HAD to eat later but not the feeling of getting low!

There is a DISabilities forum here and some diabetic issues are discussed. I can't say I have perused it very closely. Good luck!
