Appreciate your opinions on how weird this is (long)

Three strange things have happened at work. We do work in a secured building and area. Badges are necessary to enter into the building and through various doors throughout the complex of three buildings (three floors each).

The first one happened sometime this summer.
I was standing at someone's desk in my work area. That person has a remote control boom box (CD player, etc).
She was sitting, I was standing (next to the boom box). The boom box started playing.
I asked her if she turned it on. She said No.
I asked her if it was on a timer. She replied No.
I asked how/why it was on. She didn't know. She just said it sometimes happens.
I asked her if she was sure it was not on a timer and she didn't know it.
She said, no. Sometimes it just goes on and sometimes it's even on when she arrives in the morning.
She is one the first, if not the first person in to work in the mornings, generally. She sits back in a corner, her boom box is underneath a shelf and she keeps the volume low.
Okay ---- Odd, but I figured she must have it on a timer and doesn't realize it.

Then, around a month ago --
A co-worker's (same floor, but across the building) father died after an extended illness. No surprise. A few went to the funeral. I didn't.
When the others returned, they were talking about the funeral.
Afterwards I went to the breakroom and was heating up lunch in the microwave. I was thinking about the funeral and my father's funeral, etc.
The coffee machine behind me started -- by itself.
No cup dropped down, but the coffee and condiments are pouring down.
Had I been thinking, I would have stuck a cup underneath. ;)
Okay -- that's odd too. I've never known that to happen, but anything is possible.

We moved from the first floor of this building to the second just a few weeks ago.
TODAY, I was going down a hall to a stairs that leads to the first floor/break room area.
As I was reaching for the door handle it sounds just as if someone is trying to enter a locked door.
I'm thinking -- oh someone has their hands full and is having trouble opening the door, or they tried to open the door before the card reader beeped, etc.
So I wait a few seconds before I open the door, thinking I will startle them.
I waited about three seconds, opened the door (that swings towards the outside, not in). No one is there.
I look up the stairwell. No one.
I look down the stairs. No one.
And no noise of anyone using the stairs or coming or going through any other door. Even if someone could have moved that fast, I would have heard a door shut, card reader -- something.
The doors don't have knob handles. They have the lever handles that push down. And I noticed that door is one of the few with no card reader. (Not used very often.)

So how weird is all this?

I spoke to a few others, just to see if I was the only one noticing odd stuff. One commented she did have a few odd things happen, but she just shrugs them off.
I guess it doesn't matter. It's just one of things that makes you go. "Hhmmmmmm"

Thoughts?

Luv2Roam,

First of all, I have to make the disclaimer that I wholeheartedly believe in ghosts and spirits, although I have not had any "weird" experiences myself. Hawaii has a long history of strange occurences.

In my work building, the State Capitol, there have been many weird occurences that happened to people I know personally. The sound of a typewriter typing although only that person is in the office, weird happenings with telephones, cigar smells in the hallway when no one was smoking recently (apparently a late Governor from decades ago used to smoke cigars and frequently roamed the capitol to talk with people), Queen Liliuokalani showing up in the parking lot, etc.

I suppose many people do not believe in these things, but I do, and if it is a spirit around you, it seems like one that is just very playful and means no harm.

Well, you know, at the coffee cup incident I really (jokingly) wanted to say Who's Here? ;)
I KNEW no one was in the room with me. But the logical side to me looked around. And of course no one was there but me.
It's not an *old* building -- maybe 12 years old. ???
I don't know what was there previously. But put all these things together and it spells ODD.
But I don't feel threatened. It's just something wants to be noticed. (Prankster) If it were blinking lights or something, I would just chuck it up to faulty wiring. But these *common* incidents make me wonder a little more.

I think electronic things just do strange things from time to time.

I have 2 TVs that will change channels or volume when I'm on the other side of the room, even when I'm sure that nothing is touching the remote. I joke with DH that we have a ghost who loves TV, but really I just think that that kind of stuff happens sometimes.

:earseek: I think it would be interesting to find out the history of the land where the building was built!!! :earseek:

The boom box and the coffee maker seem to have obvious explainations. Another person could have an electronic device that works off of a remote and the boom box could be picking that up. This could even occur through a wall so you might think no one else was in your room, but someone could be in a room next door. The coffee machine could just be malfunctioning. Perhaps someone had put money into it for a cup and it never delivered then it tried to make the coffee but the cup got stuck or the cups were out. I have no explaination for the mysterious sounds behind the door. Perhaps you heard pipes clanking in the walls or something. So long as nothing physically damaging has happened to either you, someone else in the office, or office equiptment I think you are safe.

I agree with Saffron....it's not an old Indian burial ground is it?

Well, the electronic device is a good shot. At that time, we were in the corner of a glass building. Not much around. HOWEVER, we have underground parking and at that time, the loading dock was below that person's desk area.
Rarely we would hear a delivery truck, but not often. But that is a consideration.
We are the finance dept and took up that whole area. And it's pretty secure -- everything is locked up, rooms, etc. No other people or devices were around EXCEPT underneath was part of one level of parking. (100% enclosed, underground parking.)
ABOVE us was a part of the building leased by IBM. And we knew their computer room was right over our heads. They have those built up floors and we could hear some woman's heels clicking across the floor all the time.
Could be something they had too.
I'll have to ask her if it has turned on by itself since we have moved.
:)
Interesting point. :)
Today was no pipes. It sounded exactly like someome trying to get in our locked doors. I've worked there three years. And that's just one of those noises you recognize.
Interesting that I never realized until today that of the above ground floors in that stairwell, that is the only one without a card access security. Floor three and one have it. But not floor two.
And floor one in that area is empty now. It's where we use to be and they moved us out. They are refurbishing and expanding another dept from another building.

Well-I would definately say the boombox was caused by a remote some where else-opening the door over the loading dock or even someone's remote keyless entry-we had a similar situation at home when our neighbors garage door opener caused a remote control truck one of my sons had to drive madly around the room-it is very funny to tell about now but it terrified my boys the first few times it happened when they were very small.
The coffee machine incident was most like caused by it sticking for some reason and then when you used the microwave (they pull a ton of amps) the power fluctuation caused it to unstick.
As for the door-no explination-but I know how you feel-I am the first person in my group to arrive each morning-yet I always alway here the sound of someone's keyboard clicking away. Our area is between two QA labs, but I manage the lab staffing and I know there is no one there that early-I have gotten used to it but it is still a little creepy.

I'm with Dan......

Has lightning struck your building lately ???????

Steve

LOVE IT DAN! :)
But which should I do -- Take the spooky stair (door) or take the ELEVATOR? ;) :jester:

I say Ghosts are trying to contact you:D :D

I think you're haunted.;) :p

I have no idea. Wierd though.

Love the theme Dan! :teeth:

I suggest keeping your eyes and ears open but not assuming too much, not yet anyway. :D Building don't have to be old to be haunted. There's the haunted Toys R Us ( http://dawghouse.topcities.com/ptoyrus.html ) and workers in a museum in San Antonio that started supposedly having weird experiences right after it was built.

I don't know but it is interesting. :D
