Is there a way to leave your phone in your room, connect your apple watch to wifi, and send/receive text messages through it to other devices using the navigator app?

Nope.

Nope, they would have to create a navigator app for watchOS for that to work. As the wearable market has somewhat plateaued at the moment it is pretty unlikely they will be designing one in the near future.

Apple Watch notifications work as follows:

• If iPhone screen is unlocked, notifications appear on iPhone.
• If iPhone screen is locked, notifications appear on Apple Watch if you are wearing it and it's has been unlocked.

This applies to all apps on the iPhone (even if there isn't a Watch app).

The watch still receives notifications from the phone if it's within range of bluetooth. There's no wifi antenna in the watch so this is the only way for it to work. It may be possible to respond on the watch as well depending on the how the api works.

The Apple Watch does have built-in Wi-Fi (802.11b/g/n 2.4GHz). It can only connect to known networks that your iPhone has already connected to.

Well with mine, just versus the app isn't on my phone doesn't mean I can't reply to it. I have an app called group me and although it's not an Apple Watch app if someone sends a message, I will get the notification and respond. Although you can't just go and say something if you didn't get a notification, hope this helps.

Yes there is wifi in the watch, it picks up the wifi setting from the phone. There have been times my phone was off and I would still get a text.

Thanks everyone. I guess I'm hoping they work some way out for you to be able to leave the phone in your stateroom and use the watch to text with the navigator app. I am seeing it's just not at that stage yet!
