Apple Watch and Disney Magic Bands

If the watch can not do everything that the MB does then it is useless for them to spend money on it. People won't understand it. It is hard enough for people to understand MB (seriously how many weekly threads we see of basic questions from disers that have even use them before ). Add to that another thing to try to explain to to them! A total nightmare for CM.

I don't see why Disney would give up revenue they are receiving from people buying special edition Magic Bands. That will certainly be a by product of them allowing people to use their devices instead of Magic Bands.

Seeing how Disney can't get their IT dept working reliably with what they have implemented now I sure hope they aren't trying to add more features. Besides, are there enough Apple Watch users who go to Disney to even bother?

Using a magic band in 2013 is why I bought an Apple watch in the first place. I could see the potential. Too bad the WatchOS is so buggy, and I am really, REALLY hoping they finally get it right with OS3. Right now, the apps are mostly too slow to be usable. My running app crashes a good third of the time I try to use it. It is just frustrating.

I would like it if they make the Apple watch work as a magic band so I don't have to wear two wristbands.

According to articles I read Apple relies on Disney to get a good count on the amount of watches being used for purchasing items and sales and revenue are up. They are releasing a new operating system in september and a new watch later this year.

Oh I agree! And you are going to love the new software. Its not buggy at all and all the Apps work as fast as ever. You literally click on the app and its up and running. Plus texting from the Apple Watch is now very easy. I think the new software is going to blow up sales for the Apple Watch.

Theres really not a lot of money involved with letting the Apple watch be used as your park pass, etc. All it should take is some basic IT and some unlocking and maybe some new coding. Its not hard to use, and the people who already own the watches should really understand how their watch works, the Disney app would literally just sync their Apple Watch to the My disney experience app and boom it would work.

Really??? If they allowed the watches to work as magic bands, Disney would make a TON of money on selling "Disney Apple Watch accessories" They could sell the watches in the park, they could sell bands for the watches, faceplates, etc... The possibilities of product they could sell for a watch is endless, also the prices are much higher on Apple related devices then a piece of rubber (aka Magic Bands).

Anyways, just my opinion and thoughts. To me it seems like a no brainer. The work is already done by Apple, all they need to do now is to make some accessory products and it put a HUGE price tag on it and DISers would be begging Disney to take their $$$.

Did you miss my post? The Apple watch as is cannot be used as a magic band. It isn't capable of the high frequency rfid used for Storymaker and on-ride photos, as well as the fact that it can't be used at water parks. It can be used to replace the rfid card used by offsite guests, but not the magic band. Disney is not going to pay programmers to downgrade the "experience" for a niche market.

I did, and I think you are incorrect. They have a new watch coming out this year that should be capable of high frequency rfid. Also who cares if its not 100% water proof, I would still wear mine in the water park. I wear mine in the shower, my pool at home and the ocean; it never crapped out and works fine. And for people who do not want to wear their watches to the waterparks they could switch to a magic band. Its not downgrading its making the "Experience" available to a wider range of users. Disney makes TONS of iPhone cases, and Im sure they would love to cash in on disney Apple Watch bands, I know I would buy them. I have over 10 bands and would rather invest in a watch band that I can wear on and off property to show my love for Disney then just in the Parks.

The active RFID transmitter in Magic Bands runs at 2.4GHz, super high frequency RFID. High frequency is 13.56MHz. The technology isn't there yet.

You still have the whole, can Disney IT find it's way home at night question. They are not known for their reliable software.

LOL completely agree. Its because they pretty much don't have much of an IT dept here in the states which to me blows my mind. We live in a technological world where every company has either an IT dept or hires a third party company to handle/oversee their IT needs.

Either way it will cost money and if the watch doesn't have long RFID it won't be the same as a MB. Then you have to explain to guest that while you can enter the park your pictures won't show up. You have way to much faith in Disney IT, the app is glitchy as it stands now after years of perfecting it.

So what your saying is that Magic Bands only run at 2.4GHz but its impossible for Apple watch to run at the Same frequency to work as a Magic Band. That seems confusing to me, I may be reading what you're saying incorrectly, but what I'm getting is that the technology isn't there yet at that price, but somehow Disney is making it work, but Apple couldn't?....

You know what, I absolutely do have too much faith in Disney IT lol. Also the Watch can run at the Same long range RFID as the Magic bands, but when it comes down to it; its will Disney want to take this route and get into the Smart Watch Market. My guess is yes. The next 10 years is going to be exciting. Everyone will be entering their homes, their cars, starting their cars, turing on their alarms, their lights, thermostats etc.... A lot of people do all that now, but in 10 years its going to be the "Norm"

They had an in house IT when MDE first came out. It was worse then than now

I think you have more faith in the numbers of Smart Watch users than I do. I see little to none when out and about. Their numbers will have to jump drastically before there is enough of a market for something as intricate as making one a MB

It was the same thing when "paying" for something was done by a smart device. Now I know a lot of people who use their phones to pay for something then their atm/credit cards. Its the same thing with the watch. Once it is perfected, and makes life easier it will be huge!

I agree eventually they will be more common. But it's not there yet. Even using your phone to pay is not common here. As much as I shop (which I admit is way too much) I've never seen a single person pay with their phone. Some areas are likely much faster to adapt the technology than others. But even in our area that are frequented by Millennials I'm not seeing phone payments used. Other than credit card payments on a phone. Those are very common.
