Apple iPod question

My DD got the small 120 song ipod Shuffle yesterday for her birthday. We can't get it to work. It was connected to the USB port for over 4 hours and blinks charged but won't play. Now the directions say to install software but my computer geek DH says it doean't need it and his sisters bigger one said the same thing and worked fine without it. Does anyone have one of these and can tell me if you do need to install it?

I have the reg ipod and I needed to go to the imusic on my apple to download the songs.....that i downloaded from my cds....im sure u already did that so im not sure what to tell u next though....
