We just purchased a resale contract that has no current points, but I will be getting 2013 (125) points beginning December 1st.

I was under the impression that if I wanted to book my upcoming April 2014 trip *now*, instead of after Dec.... that I would have to technically 'borrow' points. But, I went into the system and it said that I had 125 2013 points available now and 125 available to borrow from 2014 and it allowed me to book without making me borrow anything. How is this even possible???

Is this because I am technically traveling in the correct timeframe.... And it doesn't matter that I am booking now? I am so confused.

I am certainly no expert so someone will correct me if I'm wrong but my understanding is that since you are traveling during your 2013 UY you don't need to borrow the points in order to book now. It just matters that the points are available for when you are traveling. Since your trip falls within Dec 1 2013 - Nov 30 2014 you don't have to borrow anything.

Your dec UY will basically be good all of the next year , since it starts in dec you get the 12 months after so you are still 2013 UY for the April trip . You wouldn't be able to use your points before dec 1 unless you had 2012 points

Basically all months in 2014 will be your 2013 UY except dec 2013

This is correct. Your points are already available for the April reservation. And if you wanted to do a stay prior to 12/1/2013, you could borrow those points.

Also as mentioned, if you need more than 125 for your April reservation, you could borrow points from 2014.

You already have *technically* received the points. And you ARE, not just technically, traveling inside the Dec 2013 UY.

I think the biggest advice for DVC is "don't overthink it!"

First, your account should currently contain use years December 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015. So 2013 is already there, as well as 2014 & 2015.

Your April stay is in your 2013 use year (12/1/2013 to 11/30/2014) so that is all that matters when looking at available points. The date you make the reservation does not factor in.

Thanks everyone! I definitely was overthinking it. Now it seems almost silly... What if I wanted to book a trip in January, did I really think I would have to wait until Dec to book it?? I feel dumb!

Having a December UY adds to the confusion. You get new points in XXXX year which are available for use in XXXX + 1 year minus 1 month. I find that the DVC member website makes it fairly easy to keep track of your points, and I really like that they send out a banking reminder now. Hopefully there will be a DVC app someday and a banking text reminder can be sent and you can just jump to the app and bank your points. Of course, we have reached a point when we know exactly when we can travel, so once I have those trips planned, I automatically bank the points online.

I don't want to confuse you but someone on here once explained it to me this way. When you bought your contract, technically, you got ALL of your points at that moment in time. They are just not available until they are available to use, bank or borrow for any particular year.

As someone above already said, don't overthink it. Those are already your points. It's just a matter of when you are allowed to use them.

I try really hard to not look at it in terms of a calendar year, but it's still so hard to think about "2013 points' and use them throughout all of 2014.

This year, about a month ago I had a mini freak out when I was looking at my '2013' points and trying to plan next year and I thought 'OMG! I should have banked these!'

I'll get the hang of it eventually, but yeah... the Dec UY really still messes with me.

It is a perfectly logically assumption. I also assumed it too with a Dec UY until I went to make a reservation LOL.

I think January would be the best UY to have just from a confusion standpoint. I have June, but if I had december, I would always consider my points a year after when they actually were. 2013 points are really Dec 2013 through Nov 2014. So 11 out of the 12 months to use them are actually in 2014. But as many have said, you need to have the points available during the TRIP time frame, not the booking time frame.

We bought some pts and banked the 1st year into 2013 December UY for a future reservation November 2014. Then we reserved HHI & Vero in March 2014 and they used our banked pts first instead of the couple pts I had left on my other contract. First I was worried the small amount of pts would become marooned but actually I can't even bank them until next July. Then, I was confused and worried that this wouldn't give me enough pts to use our Home advantage for the venue of our pts purchase and MS reminded me that we can borrow from the next year. Have to say it is confusing - sometimes I wish our UY was the same year we're using the pts in numerically.
