I've decided to get an AP. I want to be able to access the info on the site ASAP, but will be getting the gift card on my b-day on July 16th. I will be going to DL from July 5-7. Should I get the Deluxe AP now and use the birthday gift card to upgrade to Premium? I ultimately want that, but I would also like to use the gift card somehow since I don't know how much I'll be spending at the parks other than for food. So tonight.... should I get the Deluxe then upgrade to the Premium on my birthday? OR get the Premium now? (I don't see why I would but I need the reinforcement) Thanks!

Although some people have reported being able to use the number on their vouchers to access the AP site, most can't. I couldn't. So even if you bought it now, you probably wouldn't be able to access it anyway. And I think you still live away from so cal you can't activate it yet. So all you can get now is your voucher, and those do expire! (though everyone who has reported that happening has been able to get them extended OR get the money they paid towards the voucher put towards an AP if the price had increased)

So I'd just sit tight. (the AP site isn't that terrific anyway, LOL)

I've heard mixed reports on whether the gift card can be used towards upgrading an AP. Disney's website does not mention it from what I've seen.

Buy a Deluxe AP voucher from California Costco's. They include a $50 gift card that can be used towards upgrading and you'll still get the bday gift card as well.

I don't live there yet, and I don't have a membership . Isn't a Costco membership $50? I just ordered a DDRD card for $101 that I'll use towards an AP in some fashion. Maybe I could benefit from a Costco membership anyway. Decisions decisions!

I have a membership. Sorry I don't recall what it costs, they just add it to my bill when it's time to renew. The thing about Costco is that if you are a single person, living alone, a lot (most) of their food stuff is sold in bulk. I have a small family of 3 and we often shop there though just for convenience. They sell all kinds of stuff, not just food, and often a lot cheaper than outside. Costco is excellent with returns/exchanges, and always honors what they sell. If you can makes friends with someone who has a membership, you can shop on their card and just pay for it yourself. Where I live, once in a great while they offer a chance for people to go in and shop with a printed one day membership coupon to try to get you to sign up. Good luck! Maybe a local who lives there would be able to meet you and help out a fellow Dis member.

In the thread linked to, DDreams is actually saying you CAN use the b'day funcard to upgrade.

And while it isn't spelled out on perlster's thread, I've seen it mentioned many times on mouseplanet's forums (where a few CMs post...it's there that "we" learned that one can buy a ticket with the funcard, as long as we go to a different ticketbooth from where we got the funcard, and it's where we learned AP holders can buy a blockout pass and get the funcard).

Reading through the mouseplanet thread, someone in late January upgraded their so cal AP with their b'day funcard and a bit of extra money. Since giftcards are "money" and since you can use multiple giftcards to upgrade to an AP (we used 3 giftcards to get to our total of $180 to upgrade our 5 day tickets!), I would imagine that using the costco $50 disney giftcard and the funcard would be possible.

Ummm, wait, you're going the 5-7 of July and then again on your bday (th 16th) right? So your best would be to get the park hoppers for the 5-7 or get a Deluxe AP then. Come in on your bday and use your fun card towards your upgrade. Actually your best bet would be to find someone with a Costco membership OR get a 1 day pass to "check it out" (I think they still do that but call your Costco to make sure) and get the Deluxe AP voucher from Costco, then get your AP activated on the 5th so you don't have to pay a blackout fee, get the $50 gift card with your new AP and save that gift card. Come back on your bday, get your Fun Card and then use the $69 Fun Card and your $50 gift card to upgrade to the Premium AP, that gives you $119 towards your $120 upgrade leaving you to pay the difference of $1. You CAN use your Fun Card for upgrades and you CAN use the $50 gift card for upgrades.

Boo bear, I know you haven't moved to SB yet, but I might be able to help you out with shopping at Costco when you arrive. I have a membership, but rarely use it! The Costco is in Goleta too, it's pretty close to UCSB.
