cloudconnected1039 - Exactly! This has been my belief all along. I am 100% certain that not all 1 million AP holders entered this contest - probably not even close to that number.
I think that we here on the DIS may assume that everyone who holds an AP is as excited about all things Disney as we are and that they would make a special trip for Star Tours or any other new ride.
But, really, there are lots of people who have gotten AP's simply because they were going to be at DLR for multiple days in one trip, and decided it would be cost effective to have an AP for discounts on that trip, etc.
Plenty of AP holders live out of state or live out of the country - I have seen some of those people post here. Their work/school schedules may not allow for a trip, or they may not be able to justify the other costs involved in making such a trip.
Also, it's not going to be a big enough deal to some people to ride Star Tours before the general public sees it. If this were going to be the only opportunity to ever ride Star Tours at all, and it was never going to open to the general public, then yes - more people would enter. But as it is, it will open to the public and many people will probably just view it as, "Eh...I'll get on the ride eventually."
Then you would have to actually know about the contest - for those AP holders who merely got their AP's for discounts on one specific DLR trip, they may not keep up with the AP news. They may not bother checking the AP section of the website. They may not be members of the DIS!
For example, two of my friends have Premium AP's
and live in Orange County (though not in Anaheim), about 20 minutes from Anaheim. They get AP's every year because it is more cost effective for them if they want to maybe go to DLR 3 or 4 days a year for a few hours at a time, to ride TSMM and a few other things. They enjoy DLR a lot - and we always have a great time when they come to join me on my trips.
But they are not DLR superfans like we are here on the DIS. Not only would they probably not know about the Star Tours AP preview to begin with (because they don't really follow the AP news and they don't belong to the DIS), but if they did know about it they probably would not take time out of their schedule if it's a work day to come and ride Star Tours.
I have a hunch that there are quite a few people like my friends, who got APs because it was practical but they are not as avid about previews and that kind of thing.
