AP retail discount, asking to show on MDE

My local YMCA can just scan my membership card and they know I have an active membership and my photo shows up on their computer screen so I don't have to worry about showing them my driver's license. The fact that Disney can't do the same just shows the incompetency of their IT team.

I thought this has been being asked for years now. I know with DVC they stopped issuing cards - what in 2019? 2021? It's been a while. The weird one was the CM back in April who insisted he was not going to look in MDE, but made me download the card to my google wallet so he could see it there. The funny part is that version wouldn't let him see anything helpful, he just had no idea what he was asking for.

Our last two trips they asked to see MDE every single time. They even wanted to see it to get into the AP lounge in Epcot. I offered my AP card, she said I had to show my MDE.

Yeah, I miss just showing the card, but when they quit putting the expiration date on the card there was no way to prove you had a valid AP other than through MDE. I don’t keep my phone out and turned on most of the day in the parks so it’s a pain to do it when making a purchase, but I understand why they are requesting it.
Was told by a couple CMs technology wise they could still use the AP Card. They scan the card and it will show if it is valid or not. However they are instructed to have you open MDE and show a live ticket. A couple have made me move the screen to make sure it was not a screenshot.

I am not bothered by it at all because the cheaters cost us all more money.

I wonder how long it'll be till we have to show it for parking?
Been showing it for parking for YEARS with ID. Only in the last year would they let me scan a MB but then they checked my ID very close to my face to make sure it was my MB. Can not blame them, easiest way for someone to avoid paying for parking is using someone else's MB.

It's been like this for me at least a year now. They wouldn't accept a screenshot of the digital AP either. It has to be in the MDE.

Does anyone know why they're doing this? Too many people cheated? 😕

One is Disney is moving towards NO physical cards and lots on here have said they were not given a card. We always ask for one just in case ... I am sure LOTS of folks cheated trying to use someone else's AP or even their own expired AP. The discounts are very good especially when they run the 30% off shopping sales.

The whole world is going digital, and folks have to get with it or be left behind. And if someone really can't do digital I'm sure they can get a card and when they want to use it they might have to wait for a supervisor to clear it. :confused3

Our experience has been that it is very rare that they ever ask for ID when entering parking. Though we are usually entering late in the day, so not sure if that perhaps makes them think we are AP holders since most park guests taking advantage of someone else's band may be more likely to show up in the AM.

We've driven to the parks for decades, and I honestly don't think I've ever been asked for ID to enter the parking lot - my MB scan showing we have a resort reservation and an AP (didn't always have AP!) has always been enough. But I can see another opportunity for sharing bands and abusing the system a bit.

I go back to the days we had to have a paper on the dash showing we were resort guests - and they'd wave us through. No chance to abuse that old process, I'm sure!!

Can I ask where they need to look on the App? If I go to Membership and Passes it just says DVC member, but no mention that we have direct benefits.

For the AP it was tickets and passes. Sorry don’t know where for DVC.

For DVC you need to go through the process of linking your ownership to MagicMobile and putting a digital card (you can pick any card that’s offered, it doesn’t have to be the DVC card specifically) into your phone’s digital wallet. When you look at the information on the “back” of the card (process varies by iPhone vs. Android) it will say DVC-Y as an Affiliation under your name.

If you open the MDE app, tap the 3 lines lower right, and scroll down to Set Up MagicMobile Entry, the app will walk you through the process.

On MDE
1. Hover over the "My Disney Experience" tab, and select " your name Profile" from the drop-down menu.
2. Click on "Memberships and Passes".
3. On the next screen, select "Add Your Disney Vacation Club Membership".
4. Follow the onscreen prompts to enter your Disney Vacation Club account information and click "Done" to finish linking your accounts.

adding DVC card to wallet
Make sure you are logged into the My Disney Experience app and tap the three-line menu icon in the bottom right corner. Select the Disney MagicMobile tile and tap the "Set Up Your Pass" option. At that point, you can customize which design you prefer (I currently have the DVC custom style), and then an "Add to Wallet" button should be available.

viewing DVC card in wallet:

click wallet icon/click dvc card/click "i" symbol top right and it will have your affiliations and QR code- not your actual membership number

yes on the MDE app, it DVC and any other affiliations are listed under memberships & passes. It DOES NOT show if you are eligible for membership extras on the app. You must add your DVC card to your mobile device wallet. please see above.

MANY AP do not stay on property. With parking free, they should be verifying a valid ID.

And paper pass easily replicated with new dates.

Thank you so much for these detailed explanations! So helpful :)

We almost always stay onsite, often drive to the parks. That’s a little different than AP I guess? They always just swipe the MB, never ask for ID but sometimes ask what resort we’re staying… probably as a less invasive confirmation it’s our MB. Maybe if we were wrong they’d ask for ID? The resort we stay always asks for the driver ID first time we pull into resort.

Not an issue to show it on my phone, but I HATE carrying my drivers license with me. I'd rather keep it in the room safe. Would it work if I took a photo of my license? When staying onsite, my car NEVER leaves the hotel parking lot.

No. You can't take a photo of your license. That reminds me of a person my merchandise CM friend told me about a guy who not only had a screen shot of someone else's AP, they also had a photo of that person's drivers license and they didn't even look similar. I mean, kudos for creativity, but that's a pretty desperate attempt to cheat the system.

I carry my ID everywhere and have never lost it. There are phone case wallets, wallets that clip to the inside of your pocket, bags that securely hold it... lots of options.

I NEVER go anywhere without ID and phone (which I def need at Disney World). Insurance cards etc can be saved as screenshot. I have a case with a slide door on back I put them in.

At one point a few months back a popular blog was saying merch CMs were making them pull up their pass on their iPhone wallet
