AP renewal questions

We have a Platinum AP that expires in early December. We just became DVC members this year. Here are a few questions about renewing:

1. How early can we purchase the renewal? We won't be there in December, but we will be there in October, can we purchase the renewal then & it just starts on our December renewal date?
2. We are thinking of renewing either with another Plantinum or the DVC Gold level. If we switch to the DVC Gold, does that renew with the same AP or is it treated as a different AP altogether?

From their website:

You can renew your Annual Pass up to 60 days before and 30 days after the pass expiration date. Keep in mind that your renewed Annual Pass will expire one year from your Anniversary Date, regardless of when you actually renew.

You can always renew to a different AP "level"

Also, for some guests, it actually makes more sense to let an AP expire and buy a new one if there are several months of non-usage.

If I have more than a month or two, after my AP expires, that I won't be going to WDW, I don't renew it. I just buy a new one. Makes more sense.

I actually thought about this since mine expired 9/20 and I'm not planning on going back until spring but then I got to thinking what if they raised the prices, then I'd not only lose my 15% discount for renewing I'd lose more for waiting so I went ahead and renewed.
