AP purchase & FP question

I'm trying to understand the AP purchase vs. activation and how FPs work. If I purchase an AP on the 1st of the month am I free to make FPs at that time or do I need to wait until I activate the AP?

So... buy AP on 8/1, will activate on 8/10. Can I make the FP on 8/1 or 8/10?
Also, what is the activation process? Do we need to go to the park? TTC?

1. Yes.

4. On the day you buy it. Unactivated APs can advance-book FP+.
5. Two things:
First, go to a Guest Relations or ticket booth to get your "AP Card" (Even if you have a MagicBand.)
Second, the AP will start it's year of "operation" (become valid/activated) on the date that
you first enter a WDW park.

Unless you just have to wait until Aug 1 to purchase, you can purchase now and book your fastpasses. Like Robo said, your year doesn't start until you activate the tickets.
