Hi all, we will be 2 adults 3 children going home in Jan for a week-pretty sure it will be our only trip in 2006. Is it worth it for me to buy an AP to get the DDE discount if I can't use the pass again in the year?
Our last trip we paid cash and used the meal plan-it was great. What would you do? :confused3

How long will you be staying? Where are you staying? Do you eat out at sit down restaurants much?

For my husband & I the DDE card paid for itself last January at three sit down meals. We only used it once in April because we either at in the room or ate fast food.

For us its worth it but then we have at least 2 sit down meals per day while in Florida. I'll have the card with me when I go again in March for 14 days and I know the card is going to be worth every penny...

I say yes..if you are sure you can get 2 trips in or a really long 1st trip in. Usually we get about 18 days in and the DDE always pays for itself many times over. Last year I took 11 people to CM it paid for itself in one meal. If you like to have drinks I think you would make out even better. :drinking1 :drinking1 Beacuse I believe your DDE discount is on the total bill.

Yes! It was definitely worth it for us. We (4 adults) saved nearly $400 over a week's stay in October with the DDE card. We did mostly two TS meals a day (with alcohol) and only a couple of counter service meals during the whole trip. The table service restaurants and lounges are a big part of our trips - we enjoy them.

What you'd save and if it's worth it for you depends on your family's eating habits. If you don't normally do many TS meals, rarely drink "adult beverages" or you eat in your villa often, it might not be a good deal. If you weren't planning on otherwise purchasing AP's, it might not save you much. You might be better off with the meal plan that will be availble to DVCers starting in April.

Do the math, we were marginal until my husband announced a new vendor in Orlando which means he'll be spending a lot more time there. Meaning the AP and the DDE can get him in for a quick evening when he would be alone in the hotel room. We were two adults and two kids, and the DDE/AP did pay for itself in this one trip - but we had lots of drinks, two signature dining nights, two character breakfasts. When I originally rant the numbers, with one character breakfast, one signature dining location, and fewer drinks, we didn't break even.

Don't forget to add out of pocket expenses with the AP - for us my DH's admission to a waterpark (the rest of us had hoppers)!

We are going for a week. We usually eat a couple character meals per trip, a sit down meal every night and a counter service lunch or snack during the day. Since becoming DVC'rs, we will have all but 2 breakfasts in the room and a big meal in the eve. (hopefully at least one at the California Grille!!) What do I do?

We were there for 10 days in June-July and it paid for itself. We did go to places like Jiko and Yahtsman, plus other places, however,

We have since used it for 5 days in August and 10 in October. We plan to use it tomorrow for 6 days and in February (it has more than paid for itself). ;)

We were there for 6 days in November. The discounts with the DDE covered not only the cost difference between a PH and AP, cost of the DDE card and saved us about $100 on top of that.

We ate breakfast in the unit, and most days one CS and one TS meal including some character meals , so our dining habits are similar to yours.

Well figure it is about a $75 per person difference between the Park Hopper and the Annual Pass. Add another $50, to this for the DDE... So you are talking a $125 fee for the DDE (since you only need to buy 1 annual pass).

Your eating habits fall inline with the Dining plan. SO it is an option as well.

Basically look at the following:

1) Will you order a lot of alcohol? If so, then the discount of the DDE will help you defray the cost. If not, the DP is probably better.

2) What do you eat at a TS meal? Since DAK is the only park where the DDE can be used on CS, TS is where the big difference comes in. If you typically order appetizers and Dessert (which is included with the DP) then the DDE will probably not be worth it, unless ordering the cheapest thing on the menu. I actually compare Le Cellier in another post with the most expensive combo and the cheapest using DDE and the DP. If you order all the same food normally with either discount, the DP is the better choice. If you JUST get entrees, then the DDE might be better. You need to do the math a bit.

3) If you are goign to deviate from the above plan and instead do 2 TS a day, then the DDE is the better choice.

My picks for using DDE over DP:

If you order large amounts of alcohol at Dinner.
If you DO NOT usually order individual appetizers and Desserts, and only do an entree.
If you DO NOT dine at CS, and instead dine 2 or more times a day at TS.
If you like Atlantic City Dance Hall (free admission)
You want to eat at V/A and have a decent size party.

My Picks for using the DP over DDE:

If you like lots of food.
If you do not drink a lot of alcohol at meals.
If you don't mind staying to a 1 CS and 1 TS per day schedule (yes it can be modified, but you can't do 2 TS every day)

If you compare equal amounts of food w/o alcohol, the DP blows DDE out of the water. A Shrimp cocktail, A filet mignon, an ice tea, and a cheesecake slice are cheaper through the Dining Plan than the DDE. However, some people DO NOT get all this food and order a lot of alcohol, so the DDE becomes a better deal.

V/A is the biggest reason I can see if you are like me and eat a lot of food at meals. With the Wine pairings, you are saving $28 a person. My wife and I are getting an annual pass for our Jan 2007 trip because we are going again Dec 2007. We are planning to go to V/A with 4 other people, so the DDE (in addition to the dining plan) is an easy purchase, given the discount applied (basically save a little money because the TAX is cheaper (about $20), the 20% covers the tip). But since we like to eat and will finish all the various aspects included on the DP, we are doing both.

I would look at menus and get an idea and see what people order. Figure an average of $10 for the CS meals per person if paying OOP. So look at your TS ordering habits and see if the cost per person with a 20% is less than 25.00 per day (the 37.99 cost minus the $10 CS and 2.99 for snack). Remember though, you are adding an additional $17.85 per day (total) to pay for the cost of the DDE so when doing the comparison, factor that in.

My question is though, with the habits described, wouldn't the DP have been a better value (unless you ordered a lot of alcohol with dinner). Granted, it wasn't available, but I would be curious to see if you added stuff up, what the better value for you would be.

That would depend on how your group eats. For our family, there is alot of variation in how much each person eats. Most of us do not eat app and dessert, some have a cocktail or glass of wine. My mom is a very light eater, often a soup or salad only for dinner. So the DDE would be a better choice for us. But for bigger eaters, the DP is better.

The point of my original post, and maybe I didn't emphasize it, is that even on a 6 day trip the DDE paid for itself and saved us some money. I was surprised at how much. So a longer trip you should save even more.

My husband and I have days left on our 10 non expiring, but my son (age 8) will need a new ticket. Can we get the AP for just him and still get the DDE?
We will be traveling in Jan/Feb.

Thanks!

I'm pretty sure the DDE requires an adult AP. But it never hurts to call and check.
