AP discount availablity

Just found out my parents will be able to join us in WDW, would like to book them a room using my AP rate. The problem is they are driving, and locking them onto a schedule is impossible So, I would like to book room upon their arrival at the POP with AP rate. Am I crazy?

As far as I know, it's not possible. AP rates are contigent on availability -- they are not always available even if rooms are vacant. Only a certain number of rooms are available with the AP rate. Second, I've read that "day of" bookings are always at rack rate.
