anza-borrego desert state park

Has anyone here visited anza borrego desert state park and can give me some advice on it? My husband and I will be traveling to San Diego in July and he really wants to see a desert on our trip. I found that anza borrego is the closest desert for the areas we'll be in but still seems to be pretty far away. We will not have a car for this trip and so far I can't find any transport options for us to get there other than by cab which will probably cost way too much. Does anyone know of any tours of the desert that will pick us up in San Diego and bring us there and back to our hotel? Will we be able to experience much of the park without a car? I really want to make this happen for my husband but as cheaply as possible.

Hi Mel,

I've been to Anza Borrego a few times, driving down the coast from Los Angeles, and then cutting in at Oceanside. From San Diego, I think you could just go through Julian (mountain town), and then go down to Anza. I just went to Google & typed in "tours to Anza Borrego" and different options came up. Maybe you could see if you could find one leaving from SD? Being a local, we've always just driven there ourselves.

Anza Borrego is a beautiful, quaint desert community. My Dad lived there for 20 years and we loved going out to visit and go 4 wheeling. We even camped out there for years before he lived out there. It is a nice drive out there thru some nice areas between San Diego & Borrego, maybe worth renting a car for the day. I do not have any tour information but wanted to let you know too, that it is extremely hot out there in the summer months, many days reaching 115-120's.
