My 15-year old daughter is obsessed with having a bright smile. She
continually uses teeth-whitening products. Can this be harmful?
"Yes. Abusing at-home kits can cause teeth sensitivity, lead to uneven
results or make gums bleed. Teens see celebrities with unnaturally
white smiles, and they want to look like them, says Stanley Alexander,
D.M.D., a professor of pediatric dentistry at Tufts University in
Boston. But repeated treatments wont do much good most teeth can get
only about three shades lighter. Have your daughter follow instructions
on the box, and make sure she waits at least three months between
treatments. If shes not happy with the results shes getting, have her
talk to her dentist about professional procedures."
