HI DIS friends, :goodvibes

My DS, 9, wants to try out wrestling. He's 52" and 70 lbs. The sign up is next week and I'd like to hear about any inputs or stories or advice about anyone's experience.

Thanks.

My son did wrestling. It was very hard on us. We spent several hours on Sunday mornings so he could wrestle for 2 minutes. And they cried! Almost every boy who lost was in tears and it wrenched my heart.

My ds quit after a year I think because my dh complained about the amount of time we spent there just sitting.

He is considering going out for the middle school team this year. Wrestling is no cut and basketball limits the team to 10.

Good luck to your and your ds

My son wrestled all thru hs. It's a good sport for young men. It encourages discipline and discourages negative behaviors. I didn't care for going to the long matches but supported my son in it.The good thing about it is you earn your spot. There can be no favoritism or coaches choosing who wrestles when. The best man has the spot for his weight.

My son wrestled when you was younger. Let me tell you, from a parent's prospective it's a brutal sport!! When you see your kid out there on that mat, you just want to scream to end the match when your child isn't winning. It's TOUGH!! As has already been stated, the boys do cry when they lose too and that's so heartbreaking to watch.

My son has tried mostly all the sports that are available in our area at one time or another. Wrestling was the worst, IMO. We have about 3 trophies though, so it was good while he participated. We made some memories, but I'm thankful he didn't want to continue with it. Both of my kids go to the high school next year and my son who is a soccer player (9 years under his belt) has to decide between soccer, football and wrestling (both the football and wrestling coaches have approached him to join their teams). I'd like him to stick with soccer, but it's ultimately his decision. I doubt he'll consider wrestling.

Thanks for posting. I have been meaning to post the same question for a couple of days. My 10 yr olds wants to wrestle. I suppose we'll let him try this year - he's been asking since he was 8. I don't think he's going to like it. He is easily offended and he frustrates easily. Maybe wrestling will help him overcome these issues. We are trying to decide between "clubs" now. Our local club folded last year so we will have to go "over the mountain" in one direction of the other. I am not thrilled about the schedule.

Our son did some wresting as an afterschool activity when he was in 2nd grade. He didn't do any tournaments, and dropped it after a year to join Tae Kwon Do.

I'm sort of glad he is not wrestling anymore, but he WAS pretty cute in the little tiny singlet!!!

My sons did not wrestle till the were older, but wrestled with many boys that started around your sons age. No doubt about it. They were the best wrestlers and several went to state. I agree with everything everyone above has posted. Tough sport, a huge commitment and even though your son wrestles for a short time, meets can last all day and even weekends. I have mixed emotions about my sons wrestling. But it is the hardest workout they will ever have.
