The AC guy is coming out here tonight, but I'm so incredibly nervous that this is going to cost big bucks. We're putting the house on the market next month, and I really don't want to pour a ton of money into the house.

The house is always hot - the unit runs constantly during the summer. However, today, it was hotter than usual. Checked each of the vents and no air was blowing out at all, however, the unit was running.

No ice, filter had just been changed, the "insulated pipe" that he asked me to check was relatively cool - the pipe (no insulation) that was attached to it was ice cold.

He did tell me that the unit is two small for the house - it's a 2 ton when they should have put in at least a 2 1/2, probably a 3.

So, any chance this is just freon?? Or am I looking at buying a new unit??

It's possible it's freon. It's also possible there are pin sized holes in the ducts. When it runs constantly do you get cool air? How old is the unit?

Yeh, up until now, the air that has been blowing out is cold - but the house never seems to cool off in the summer (with the exception of one bedroom - which stays REALLY cold). The house was built in 2001 - we bought it in 2004, so I'm assuming it's the original unit.

I guess what's scaring me is that we had freon issues in another house several years ago, and the air would still blow through the vents - just not cool air.

This time, there's no air at all blowing through the vents. The grills in some of the rooms were still cool though.

hopefully just the compressor, maybe a little over $100.

Okay - I could live with that.

Well - I'm stumped!! The guy came out, turned the unit back on, and it's working fine! ????? I told him I swear there was not one bit of air coming out of any of the vents. I went around the whole house, climbed up on a chair and felt to see - nothing!! 8 hours later - it works fine.

I hope THAT didn't cost too much :lmao:

Nope, he's a friend of ours - thank goodness!! Grabbed a drink out of the frig, and he was good to go :drinking1

That happens to us OFTEN! you most likely have a leak somewhere.
our guy is able to to turn it off/on after a couple hours or so and BAM it's working. BUT it does go out about 2xs a Yr.
