I'm going to have some time on my hands soon and I'm looking for a good murder mystery novel to read. Anyone with a recommendation?

Not sure if they qualify as murder mystery but several of Jodi Picolut's books have to do with death/murder/legal trials surrounding them. Change of heart, the pact, and house rules all come immediately to mind.

Also sharp objects and gone girl by Gillian Flynn.

Again not typical murder mystery but I've enjoyed them all!

Sue Grafton's alphabet series
Tana French's Dublin Murder Squad series
Robert Galbraith (aka J.K. Rowling)
Patricia Cornwell's Scarpetta series

Laurie R. King has a wonderful series that starts with The Beekeeper's Apprentice.

What kind of mysteries do you like? The "cosy" type, or the more graphic police-procedural type?

If you like historical mystery, there is a book series by Margaret Frazer that are all set in Medieval England. The main character is a nun who solves mysteries. They're very intelligently written and the language is beautiful. The first in the series is "The Novice's Tale."

Another historical series - Peter Tremayne's Sister Fidelma series. Fascinating insights into Irish history!

For more light-hearted, modern mysteries, you might like Donna Andrews "bird" series. I can't remember which is the first off the top of my head, but they are good mysteries with a lot of humour.

I love Mary Higgins Clark's murder mystery books. Have read all 30-something books she's written.

The Murder House, Caught Dead Handed (and the rest of the series), A Pall in the Family (and the rest of the series), all of the Ghost Hunter series, Aloha Lady Blue.

I like Elizabeth George - she's American but sets her stories in Great Britain

I really like the novels by Harry Dolan. The first one is called "Bad things Happen" and then "Very Bad Men" and a third one I can't remember the name of.

Also JK Rowling writing as Rober Galbraith "cuckoos calling" and "silkworm" and "career of evil". All great books.

I look forward to following this thread. I love murder mysteries and am always looking for recommendations.

If you like the thriller type, you might want to try Linwood Barclay. His "No Time for Goodbye" is probably the most famous, but Too Close to Home is my favourite. I've actually met Linwood, he is a friend of a friend and we went to the same university at the same time (but never met there). He used to write a humour column for the Toronto Star but then started writing these novels - so different from his humour writing! - and became quite famous.

The Sue Grafton alphabet series is good
Karin Salughter's grant county series that starts with blindsighted and her Will Trent series that starts with Triptych are my favourites!
Lynda La Plante, an English writer is also very good and has written lots of crime novels including the Prime Suspect series and the Anna Travis series that starts with Above Suspicion.

Claire :)

Frozen Assets - Quentin Bates - lady police officer in Iceland

Ice on the Grapevine - R.E.Donald - ex RCMP as truck driver/PI

The Color of Law (1) The Accused (2) by Mark Gimenez both really good, but i think the second was my favorite -lawyer in Texas

Emma Jameson think Elizabeth George but much shorter and with humor female police detective and her superior officer
Ice Blue,Blue Murder,Something Blue, Black and Blue
and another series starting with Marriage can be Murder -set in the past

Ben Aaronovitch London detective series, novel, interesting, humor and a little gore
Midnight Riot,Moon over Soho, Whispers Underground, Broken Homes

I love any book by Lisa Jackson .

She always has twists in there that you don't see coming.

Anything by Peter May or Peter James both excellent authors. Peter May has a number of Series- one set in China, another in France and a further set on one of the Scottish Islands. Peter James are set in Brighton England. Val McDermid is another excellent author.
