It's easier to show someone how to play than to explain, but I'll try

There are 9 boxes within the puzzle. There are 9 squares in each box. You use the numbers 1 thru 9. A number may only be used once per row, once per column, and once per box. You use the numbers they give you to solve the puzzle.
