Anyone watching Fox news right now?

There's a reporter live on the Israel/Lebanon border and there is rocket fire landing nearby him. He keeps ducking down and you can tell he's pretty scared (at least he seems it to me).

Why do they do this?

I never understand why they do that, including just the simple stories here at home where they feel they have to report from the scene of the story.

Does anybody care if they are at the scene or not?

Actually, I think it's good for the viewers of that particular "news" station to see what it's really like in a war zone. Which is more effective: hearing about missile attacks, gun fire, and bombs dropping, or seeing them in living color?

Journalists feel the need to be in the middle of the action in order to tell the best story. There is some merit to that. I was unwilling to take such risks and decided to change my major (one of the reasons, not the only reason). I can understand being in and reporting from a war-torn region in the middle of it all more than I can understand standing out in a middle of a hurricane.

We have the ability to have high quality cameras almost anywhere these days. I don't see the value of having a reporter in harms way anymore.

I can understand the desire for video from the region, but why stick a reporter in front of the camera too?

I'll never forget watching the hurricanes last year (think it was Katrina maybe?) and Anderson Cooper reporting live during the brunt of it outside his hotel. Then on live TV the hotel sign comes crashing down almost on top of them. Sadly, I was enthralled by it and kept watching.

Let's change formats...what about print media? Those journalists have to tell a story without a lot of pictures. Even with TV journalists, I can still see having the human side to it. But I admit I could be biased because of my background.

Put a camera on a drone and fly it in the bombing area. The results are the same.

I for one like it. I like seeing them report from the scene. Plus I am sure they get paid a lot of money to do it and it's their choice so why not.

Well... someone's been brainwashed by the liberal "media" haven't they? I suppose the scientific studies that have shown Fox News to be infinitely less biased and more even in coverage don't matter since the results are outside of the liberal view of "reality"? This is why I generally avoid watching any of them. The only accurate news is well researched and unbiased HISTORY.

Back on topic: Jay Leno had a great joke about reporters and hurricanes once. Something about seeing all the reports from hurricane landfalls and having reporters leaning into the wind with rain spraying everywhere yelling, "It's really windy here!" They don't douse reporters in California in gasoline and then drop them into the middle of a wildfire so that they can report, "It's really hot here!"

To put a human face on the drama? One that looks just like their viewers, rather than one of more olive skin tone? It makes the situation more relatable, I would think.

Nah, not all...just those in power. But hey, by the blase' attitude many on that side of the aisle have about it, yeah, I think you could stand to actually see the devastation wrought by policies you support, rather than just hearing about it. You should all be made to sit down and watch as men carry their torn and bloodied children away from the scene of a bombing that we orchestrated, taking out a couple bad guys in the process. ALL of you should be made to watch it. Maybe then you'd be willing to ask yourselves if it was really worth it.

But hey...that's another topic entirely. Start up a thread and I'll be glad to discuss it further.

In the interest of keeping an open mind, I'll keep this going. I'd very much like to see the scientific studies you cite (and who those studies were performed by), since the only ones produced to date that I'm aware of indicate the exact opposite from what you claim.

Thanks in advance for including your cites and the link to them. After all, it was Ronald Reagan who said "trust, but verify", right?!?

I'm a journalist. I photograph and write. Writing is pretty safe, you seldom if ever really need to get yourself in the middle of things.

The photography is a different story. While I'd NEVER get in the middle of a war zone, I do concert photography, and I have put myself in physical danger for my art. I've been kicked in the head many times. I've had 280 pound crowd surfers fall on me. I had the crowd surfers come up like a swell under me and somehow launch me up onto the stage where I was working with no barricade--I landed elbows and chin first.

I've had crap thrown into the pit that's hit or near missed me--shoes, shirts, cups, paper, stuffed animals, cans, lighters, signs, bottle caps, wallets, glasses and my favorite--someone's crutch. I've had beer spilled on me, water poured on me, musicians sweat on me--OK, some of the latter hasn't been so bad . I've had near misses with spit and puke. And still I stand there in the photo pit. In the hundreds of bands I've photographed in the past couple of years, there's only been once that I've voluntarily left the photo pit because it simply became too dangerous to stay--and I had shot the same band at another show the night before. (I have had security toss us all out in the middle of shooting because they could no longer gaurantee our safety.)

Why do I put myself in that danger? It's a passion that drives it. I know I'm taking a risk, but the internal burn for the perfect photo over rides common sense. My guess is that the war correspondents feel the same way.
