Anyone use KUMON Learning Centers

I just heard about Kumon from a friend. She is sending her 5 yr old and he is excelling.

I have a DS8 who struggles with reading and spelling. He currently gets extra help at school. I was thinking maybe we needed tutoring. Then my friend was telling me about Kumon. So now I am checking that out.

I don't know how expensive it is? and is it worth it?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

It's been 20 years, and I am sure times have changed, but I went for math in the third grade, and what a JOKE! They "talked" with me for about five minutes each session, and stuck me with a stack of problems to do, and would scold me if they all weren't done in time, yet wouldn't scold me if they were wrong (nor would they help me correct them).

I would NEVER send my kids, from my experience.

Too funny, I just posted almost the exact same thing asking about Kumon! I don't know if prices are the same nationwide but around me it is $220 for math AND reading or $110 for math OR reading.

My son had lots of friends that did Kumon and all the kids disliked going, finding the mountain of worksheets 'boring' and repetitive.

If you are considering tutoring for your child I would look for a trained teacher that can cater for your child's learning style and specific educational needs.

When we were in TX my dd's friend and next door neighborhood did KUMON. She did excel at math and by the time she got to middle school she got into the honors math.

I do remember she had to do a worksheet EVERYDAY and I mean everyday.

If your child is struggling, I do recommend tutoring and NOT Kumon.

Reading specialist here, although I am not currently working in my field. My first suggestion would be to ask at your DS's school if they keep a list of teachers or retired teachers who tutor on the side, as many do, and a trained teacher is your best bet with a reading problem. Also, check with colleges in your area to see if they have an education or reading department with a tutoring program. My graduate school had a Reading Clinic where parents could bring their children to be assessed (usually done by a teacher attending graduate school to become a reading specialist) and tutored by undergraduate or graduate students in the education and reading departments under the supervision and guidance of professors.

As a teacher my advice is to avoid any 'canned', one-size-fits-all program, which includes Kumon, Sylvan, and other tutoring 'company'. Good luck to your DS!

I don't know anything about Kumon, but can't help but ask - what the heck does a 5 year old need to excel in????

My DD had some friends who did Kumon in the early grades (I'm thinking maybe 5th or 6th Grade...early middle school years?) and she says it would really screw them up when it came time to do the math the way the teacher/textbook wanted it done.

And those kids' grades didn't really improve, never mind their comprehension..

We used Kumon for a while. Kumon did give us a surprise at the beginning. It helped my child in reading skills. But over time, the benefit is no longer that visible and we feel more pressure on its monthly bills. Then we accepted the advice from our neighbor, and started to do the worksheets on Beestar. To my surprise, DD enjoys them very much. The reading worksheets are full of interesting stories, vivid pictures, about all real life word problems, challenging stuff to help kids thinking. Plus, I also don’t have to drive her to kumon.
