Posting on the budget board because it is budget related about using the Kindle but not purchasing the actual Kindle. Wondering if anyone uses the Kindle for your PC from the Amazon website?

Just downloaded it on to my dd's little Dell mini and thought I would try it out. Haven't bought any books yet.

Just curious is anyone else has taken the Kindle budget route?

I did exactly that. I used the Kindle app from Amazon and downloaded a few of the free books. I wanted to determine if I liked reading on a screen at all. I've found it pretty easy to use and get used to. I find if I press F11 and make it full screen its really easy to read.

I recommend downloading the free books and trying it out yourself. Although I secretly want an e-reader, this is a good compromise for me--and one less electronic toy to lug around with me! But I mostly use it for vacation and travelling.

Have fun and enjoy!

Yes. I have kindle on my pc and also on my itouch. LOVE it! Lots of free books.

I also have Stanza on my itouch. They just released it for your pc but I haven't tried it yet.

There's a website called smashwords.com that has alot of free books that you can send to your computer or itouch (via stanza). Downloaded a bunch of them today. :goodvibes

I use both the Kindle app and the Barnes and Noble version (BN eReader) on my laptop and on DD's iTouch. I must say, though, that I LOVE using it on the iTouch better, but I'm happy I didn't have to go out and buy something new to use.

I agree. Use it on the itouch more. Am able to carry MANY books easily.:)

We actually sold our Kindle to Gazelle after getting the free Kindle app for our iPhones / iPod Touch. There just wasn't any need for the Kindle itself - having it on the phone was so much better. Now I know that's not the same as having it on your PC, but if you want to save money and don't mind that your PC or even laptop is as portable as a Kindle, then I'm sure it will work just fine.

As an FYI, reading on a computer or backlit phone screen is very different from reading on the Kindle. The Kindle feels like a mass market paperback page to my eyes (and DH's), and is very gentle. Reading on a computer or lit screen can be much more exhausting to eyes.

That said, my brother and sis in law have just given away the DX that sis in law won, because they both enjoy reading on their phones so much more. My eyes would be wiped out reading on that screen, but their eyes like it.

Everyone is different, but reading on the computer does feel different than reading on the Kindle itself. :)

I deliberately bought an iPod touch INSTEAD of a Kindle right after the iPhone/iPod touch Kindle app came out, because A) it was probably half the price, and B) I *wanted* something backlit so I could read in bed without the hassle of a clip-on booklight. Love it.

Totally agree. I have a kindle - also have the it on my PC, and DS Itouch.

We are able to share books this way also (up to 5 devices for one book). But reading on the Kindle is a lot easier on the eyes than reading it on the pc or Itouch. Plus the battery life on the Kindle (especially with the wifi turned off) is incredible. I can go for about a month, reading at least 1 hour/day without charging. The Itouch - a couple of hours of reading and it's dead.

Wow! Thanks everyone! Sounds like it is worth trying out on the PC and ITouch instead of actually buying one yet.

I really want the IPad so haven't jumped on the kindle yet.

I did figure that reading on the PC and ITouch would tire your eyes out more since Kindle's screen is also one of their big selling points. But I guess for a taste of it in the meantime, this is the way to go.

Glad to hear others have had success using it this way as well.

Thanks so much!
