Anyone travel with their dog?

We have travelled with our dog before and it worked out great, but we never took him to Orlando. We will be renting a house this time and I noticed some allow pets. Has anyone ever brought their pooch along to WDW? If so, how did it go? Did the dog adjust to being in a strange house all day? I am really torn on this. We have put him in a kennel near our home and I know they take very good care of him. However, he doesn't eat well when we are gone.
Anyone have experience with this?

Thx.

We have done it every Christmas / early January since 2005. Toto (the picture I used) seemed to think of it as his second home until we lost him to illness in 2009. Now his little female "sister" (not really related but both Cairn Terriers) is in charge and she loves it too! In fact w just checked out today after being here in Orlando from 12/29/10 to today. We enjoy, the dog(s) enjoy it & we all look forward to it every year as there are very few other areas we've found that accept dogs. We did take them to a beachside resort in Ocean City, Maryland one week & that too went very well for all of us.

Thanks for the info! I am sorry to hear about Toto, how nice that he was able to go with you all those years on vacation. Would you mind sharing where you stayed? I have been scouring the homes on vrbo and am a bit overwhelmed.

Thx.

All of our trips have been to Celebration World resort - just a 1/4 mile from Windsor Hills - as we keep getting great rates there (using RCI Points). If that ends or gets too expensive we have looked at other places that allow dogs / small pets in Orland but, so far, have never used a condo or house except CW. We have stayed at Homewood Suites & The Sheraton Safari (that allow dogs) but in suites not 1 bedroom or larger type units. The space in a condo/house is even more important when traveling with your pet.

We booked a villa with a British family last year (2009). We asked about pets and Alan said it was fine. They have two villas on their web site. We stayed in Tangerine. florida-experience dot com

In 2008 we stayed in a villa in the Lindfields that also allow pets but we didn't know it at the time. kidskingdomflorida dot com

These are fairly close to the back entrance to Animal Kingdom. Not as close as Windsor Hills area but just west of that. We were happy with both homes. We never get to book the same villa again. They are always booked when we finalize our dates.

The homeaway dot com site lets you sort the homes with different criteria like pools, pets etc.

We have two labs and one has a little separation anxiety. We left our laptop in a central area with the webcam running for about a half hour and left to run to the store. He paced around a lot when we left but he didn't damage anything. I guess it all depends on your pets.

We really enjoyed taking our dogs but we did not do any commando touring this time around. We spent 2 weeks in Florida and visited the parks every other day. We drove down and back from New England. The drive was the hardest part because the dogs were much more needy than the children ;)

We definately need to make sure there is plenty of room. We want this to be a more relaxing trip than in the past and will be spending more time at the house.

What a great idea to put the web cam on! I would love to know what our dog does when we aren't around. My guess is he sleeps, but maybe I am wrong! We drove to FL last year from WI and our dog was so good. Better than the kids. A couple of times we had to double check that he was in the back, he was so quiet. Thanks for the info.

I work for a magazine that encourages people to travel with their dog. We'd love to be able to answer any questions on FIDO Friendly travel you might have and encourage you to come check us out at fidofriendly.com. We've been in print for close to 11 years and love traveling with my dog.
