Anyone stockpiling food?

NYC now has a second confirmed case. This one is more serious than the first.

The first, a healthcare worker, herself, is mildly showing symptoms and was sent home, with drugs, for self-quarantine. Officials hope/think, like the regular flu, that her symptoms will resolve itself. (80% of the reported cases in China have been found to resolve itself.) Her husband is suspected he might too, have the Coronavirus, since he has been in close contact with her. He's being tested. And he too, is in self-quarantine with her.

The problem is, that before she was tested, she and her husband flew back on a flight from Iran, which is riddled with the Coronavirus. And that's how she got infected. Now, all the people onboard the plane with her have been informed. Along with their taxi/Uber driver from the airport. (No word if they have to self-quarantine or be tested.) I wonder though, if her symptoms get much worse that she has to go to the hospital. How is she going to get there? How did she even get home for the self-quarantine? I hope not by other taxi/Uber drivers.

This second case, is an Orthodox Jewish lawyer. He has NOT had any contact with people who may be suspected of having the Coronavirus. So, this is the first known "community spread" infected person here. He's in the hospital with more serious symptoms. He, unfortunately, went to a funeral the other day and attended some other, well attended Orthodox Jewish community event later. His wife and two kids are now in self-quarantine for 2 weeks. And the 2 Jewish schools the kids attend, as well as a third, as they may have associated with kids from the latter school at one of the events above, are now closed as a precaution.

Did you see this? I sure hope he wasn't taking the train during the time he was sick. and coughing and sneezing. My friend's dh and many of our neighbors commute on it, I expect more cases will be confirmed up here.

Fun fact about me - I‘m a worrier & tend to “over-do” things. DH likes to tease me & say my motto should be “If it’s worth doing, it’s worth overdoing” while I like to say, “No, if it‘s worth doing, it’s worth doing well.”

So this virus plus the CDC instructions that we should all be prepared for 2 weeks has sent me into overdrive.

On the other thread about emergency stock piles, I posted a list of what I purchased over the weekend, so I won’t re-list everything here - but it was A LOT. And I’lll be adding to it over the next few weeks.

When DH went to the store yesterday, I asked him to pick up another bottle of Tylenol & another bottle of hand sanitizer if Publix still had any in stock. (Yes, on the Tylenol & no on the hand sanitizer.)

He was joking around w/ me & said, “You’re going to become a prepper, aren’t you?”

Of course not. That’s waaaay overdoing it, I thought to myself. Initially. But, then, the more I thought about it, the more I got interested.

So I did a little research on Pinterest. And, wow.

I don’t even know how to begin to go to the extent of some of those people. I mean, how does one build up a stockpile of antibiotics? And bleach tablets? And people have stocks of Vodka & various herbs to make medicinal tinctures - while I thought I was doing well to have 2 extra bottles of Tylenol. One prepper blogger, who currently didn’t have any young children still in diapers, stockpiles diapers & formula - anyway - just in case she’s given an infant to take care of during an apocalypse-type event. I just thought we had a pretty good stash of batteries. Nope. Oh, & one article said to stock pile the heavy duty black garbage bags because, of course, those big garbage bags can serve several different purposes - like body bags. OMG.

Anyway, it was eye-opening & I realized we don’t have nearly enough. However, I also realized I wouldn’t even know really where to start w/ any kind of serious prepping.

Why, oh why are people stockpiling masks when they do nothing for general population of well people - sick people yes, according to CDC

Because people in the household might get sick and a mask could keep others from catching their coronavirus. Or at least stagger it so there is a delay and one person can be the caregiver longer. And because despite what the CDC says, in healthcare, caregivers wear masks. I've put a mask on in every droplet precaution room I've entered. They believe this is a droplet spread disease, not aerial.

BUT . . . there is misinformation being given out at all levels. They said that it is believed to be droplet and surface spread at work today, but at the same time, said we should arrange to get fitted for respirators (something I've only ever done when working in acute care. ) And that there would likely be shortages of both masks and respirators. I'm pretty sure that healthcare facilities don't go to RiteAid for their PPE, though. All the government has to do is divert all retail masks and respirators to a national supply if they don't want consumers buying them.

Me too! I kept saying, "I'd just let them get me, or I would beg to have a bullet put in my head." My husband was always like "geez, what a fatalistic attitude." I was like..."seriously???" Who would want to live through all that mess? What's the point?

There doesn't seem to be any panic buying or unnecessary stockpiling in my area. My local Shop Rite had plenty of toilet paper, bottled water, OTC meds, Clorox wipes, etc.

Could not find Purell or Wet ones wipes or liquid this week at Walmart, Clorox and store brand wipes are gone. Everything else is in the shelves here. I kind of figured this was coming so I bought a bunch of Purell and wipes early last week. I am sharing with family members. My mom lives in assisted living section of a retirement community. I have stocked her shelves with backups of everything I buy for her in case they start quarantining residents. Locally 4 private schools have required students returning from school sponsored and family trips to Italy to study from home. None have symptoms. Abundance of caution. Public schools have reportedly been advised to “ keep buildings clean including handrails, sinks, drinking fountains, dispensers, desks, and bathrooms. In one area, school custodians are using sanitation devices similar to a fog machine that clouds classrooms and buses with disinfectants. Sounds proactive and smart to me and I wonder if they shouldn’t be taking these measures anyway.

How impractical. One kid sneezes into his hand and touches a handrail, drinking fountain, pencil sharpener, etc and it's contaminated. You can't walk around a school non-stop for 10 hours a day wiping everything down in sight. Who's cleaning the balls used in PE or basketball games? Who's cleaning the wresting mats? Who's wiping down all the doors into and out of the building? Who's cleaning every.single.lightswitch in the building?

I work at a grocery store (one that's known for being stocked), and our shelves are WIPED. Hand sanitizer and other cleaning supplies have been gone since Sunday and the shipment that came yesterday was immediately gone. I would say 90% of the cans and non perishable food are gone, too. It's nuts.

I am heading to Walmart today for some odds and ends. Not stockpiling just things I need. Plan on swinging by the pharmacy section and cleaning isles just to see what the situation is. I *do* need a portable pack of wipes and a hand sanitizer for DD’s choir trip to Disneyland next month but worse case I make her homemade wipes with the soap I have on hand. Waiting until last minute to pay for the trip to see if they cancel it.
