Anyone stockpiling food?

Over the past couple of weeks, I’m finding it funny comparing the stuff I actually thought about & remembered vs. the stuff I didn’t think about needing.

We’ve run out of aluminum foil, parchment paper, glass cleaner, & Swiffer pads.

And I’ve also discovered, at least for us, it’s impossible to get enough cheddar cheese slices & bread for sandwiches & Buble & La Croix.

Went for my once every 10 day grocery visit this morning. Outside of the usual (TP, napkins, cleaning products), most things were fairly stocked with some odd exceptions - pancake mix, taco shells, shredded cheeses (cheddar & mexican blends) and most bread boxed mixes (corn bread, biscuit mix, even my beloved Red Lobster Cheddar Bay biscuit mix was all out!!! Ha!). I did find foaming hand soap for the first time in awhile, so that was a win as the kids like that more than the liquid versions.

I would buy a water distiller. It seems it would pay for itself before long.
Thanks- I’ll look into whether distilling would work. 1,4 dioxane is highly soluble in water and because of of it’s chemical properties, there seem to be only a few ($$) ways that it is able to be removed from groundwater. Seems as though contamination by this chemical is more widespread and has been a problem for a longer period of time than I knew. The issue came to light in our neighborhood last year, but I have seen studies on the problem going back to 2000.

Thanks for the reminder. Almost time for me to get another Kirkland pack of foil. It holds 750 sq ft and only needs replacement about once every 12 to 18 months. Been out of freezer paper seems like forever but the store I bought it at went out of business.

I’ll be going to the grocery store Wednesday. About the time I think I’m good to go, things get extended. Maybe I should just pretend we are in Virginia (governor there just issued stay at home until June 10).
I just don’t have enough places to put enough of the stuff we use daily to avoid going out to the store for more than 2-3 weeks.

I heard on the news that the Instacart workers who are gathering all the food products to deliver to people are now protesting that their work conditions, (the supermarkets,) are too unsafe. They are demanding PPE to keep them safe. If they start getting the virus and all quit, one of the ways people have been getting food may be ended. :(

I heard on the news that employees of some grocery chains are considering going on strike for the same reasons, yikes!

I was actually in Dollar Tree a couple weeks ago when this started, looked right at the sandwich bags & plastic wrap and thought I had enough so I didn't get anymore. :headache: I finished the box today. I had picked up more plastic wrap the other day, for $3, when I had the chance to pick it up, along with the baggies and some foil together for $3 at Dollar Tree.

One of the irritating things about this is having to get stuff not on sale, or having to buy it at the wrong store because you don't want to keep going to different stores. As more stores means more contact with more people. And some stores have raised the prices on many items to make up for people not coming into the stores and impulse buying the way they usually do. The stuff that is on sale, if the stores still have sales, are not the things I want or need.

Rite Aid actually had the brand of toilet paper I like on sale last week. Of course, the store didn't have any of the 12-packs that were on sale. They did have some of the 4-packs. So I ended up getting 3 of them, totaling double the sale price of a 12-pack. :badpc:

As things are looking to get worse before they get better, we may just be living with what I have on hand for the next few weeks and not try to brave the stores or order any more pick ups (?). We're starting to get more cases locally now and I'm pretty sure we have enough stuff. We'll just have to make do with the fresh foods we have left then subsist on frozen and shelf stable food. It's not like we'll starve, and then when we can get fresh food again it will be like a wonderful gift! Dh is immuno suppressed and I'm too nervous to venture out anymore. Stay safe everyone!

I found rice today for the first time since this all started. I couldn't believe my eyes! I did resist the urge to buy the 20 pound bag on the bottom shelf....
I didn't take into account the need to feed the resident hobbit (AKA DGD), lunch. She's a hardcore starch eater so I've already gone through 1/2 of my long grain rice stores (2 lbs). The other day bought a 4 lb bag of Carolina rice (fav brand) at a local bodega for 5 demned dollars; somewhat peeved. On the other hand it's a great place to put all the dried fruits she has issues with. Apparently, rice pudding still rules, LOL.

Found our Jewel and Target well stocked today. Jewel had lots of fresh produce, meat, bread and I even got paper towels and hand soap.

Target also very well stocked, had plenty of seltzer finally! I got kleenex and I noticed they also had paper towels and toilet paper.

Seemed pretty normal today actually.

And here's a pic of Walnut, just because. :)

Let me know if you need me to hook you up with a 20 pound bag. I know where to find one...... ;)

I figured out why the CDC told us to get bottled water at the beginning of all of this. We'll use up all the tap water washing our hands over and over and over again. :lmao:

You didn't see it 5 min after you left.

I actually just looked it up to confirm how many pounds that big bag was. And it still showed as in stock at the Neighborhood Market where I saw it. But yeah, it won't be there much longer I'm sure.

I bought two bags of rice at HMART (Asian store)
When they announced that they might stop national travel to tristate area. That was the only time I was more than a little nervous about getting food. They have had tons the whole time.

Just reminds me of this......

Heard about Houston? Heard about Detroit?
Heard about Pittsburgh, P.A.?
You oughta know not to stand by the window.
Somebody might see you up there.
I got some groceries, some peanut butter.
To last a couple of days.
But I ain't got no speakers, ain't got no headphones.
Ain't got no records to play.
