We just booked our Feb '12 overnight trip to NYC at the Waldorf. Not a bad price, either. If you have been there within the past few years, is it still amazing? I mean, it was always a landmark NYC hotel, right? Trip Advisor has great recent reviews, but I just want to hear reviews from the dis-ers!

Thanks!!

Well a friend stayed there recently and loved it (and saw Russell Brand) but she's not a dis'er. :) I'm sure it will be great.

The basic rooms are the size of a half shoe box. Be sure if you want a room for a family that you are assured a room with adequate bedding. Many, many rooms only have a single queen bed and no additional room for a roll-a-way so be sure that the bedding stated is adequate for your party.

There's a Waldorf in Times Square??

That is not a landmark hotel no, heh. I had no idea they'd put up another location. Learn somethin every day.

well silly me, I assumed the OP meant the W=A just a few blocks from Times Square, by the rest of the worlds standards it is close.

The W=A on Park Ave is spitting distance from Broadway and in some cases closer to Broadway theaters than some Disney hotels to some Disney attractions.

Unless you are staying at the Waldorf Towers (a separate hotel) you are staying at an overpriced hotel for the name sake. I usually stay at the W=A simply because it is part of the Hilton Honors program and I am a Diamond member who generally receives superior upgrades.

If I were a general non elite member I would tend to pick other hotels simply because this hotel sells based on its hotel occupancy and if you pick the lowest, cheapest, internet room you will generally receive a shoe box size room more suited for a smurf rather than a family of 4,

It's on Park, not close to B'way; it's like a mile from Times Square. I think the OP must mean... some other hotel and mistyped some part of the name maybe?

Sorry for the confusion, folks. I meant the W-A on Park Ave.

Well, all these replies about the size of the rooms makes me wonder...don't basically all Times Square NY hotels have small rooms?

I just want a nice hotel as close to Times Square as possible. Anyone have a better recommendation? Not to late to cancel and re-book elsewhere.

I took my daughter there for her 16th. birthday, we stayed on points, and under elite status. There were 4 of us, and the room was SMALL. The hotel was absolutely beautiful, but I would ask what type of room you booked. Ours was a double/double. If you want PM me and I will look for my pictures of the room.

I will admit it was a few years ago, and even then the room was a bit run down. But I loved the old world charm of the hotel.

Ah, no worries, just didn't get it.

It's good you said it though because the Waldorf is not what you want - it's not only not a Times Square hotel, it's noplace near Times Square. I mean you can walk there, it's like a 15/20 minute walk if you walk at a normal, 3 mile an hour type pace, but it's not near it at all.

As for a nice hotel, depends on what you mean. The really nicer (the boutique hotels, the older top of the line classic hotels like the Mark, the Waldorf, etc.,) hotels are not in Times Square. There are perfectly decent ones there though. There's a giant Crowne Plaza, a Hilton, a Paramount...

Most hotels in NY have smaller sized rooms - Times Square hotels tend to have larger ones, as there's a lot of newer hotel space there though.

Just stayed in Feb on points (also a Diamond member), was upgraded to an enormous suite for $99 a night! It had a full living room, wet bar, bedroom with two queens, a separate dressing area, and a huge bathroom. Also included was breakfast in the Executive Lounge.

I've stayed before not on points and didn't find the rooms small at all. In fact, I think they are much more spacious than regular hotel rooms because they are so old.

So, we ARE talking about the original Waldorf-Astoria on Park, right? If you stay, make sure you are aware of the dress code. No jeans or casual wear in the lobby after 6PM, none in the Executive Lounge at all, etc.

Good luck and enjoy. One of my all-time favorite hotels.

Not sure of your dates, but this is a cheap time of year to stay in Manhattan! I just Hotwired a Friday night in Feb and got some awesome rates

Not sure how many people are staying and what your rate was aat the WA.
If it was four or more staying in the room, and the WA was around $300, I'd cancel and book two rooms in Timesquare through Hotwire. Always book at 4* or higher on the bid sites!
If it was 2 adults, 1 child, I'd just book one room. If it was just 2 adults and I got a good rate, I'd keep the WA booking.

Whatever you choose to do, have a great time!

I love The Michealangelo hotel in Times Square area.

Hmmm, seriously rethinking the hotel now. I thought it was closer to TS.

We are two families, each two adults, two kids. We need two beds in each room.

Check out Doubletree Suites in Times Sqaure. You can't get any closer and they have suites with either a king and a pullout or 2 doubles and a pullout. I have stayed there with my daughters and it was clean and the location was amazing if you want to be right in TS

I saw that hotel, and liked it as well. Problem is, we need a refundable rate. Too many kids going with us, and you know how easily one of them can get sick the day before.

Any thoughts on snagging a good hotel rate in TS that is refundable?

I walk through the lobby of the Waldorf every morning on my way to work. It never loses its magic to me! The rooms are eh, but the ambiance is magical. Your kids will never forget it. Keep the reservation.

Walking to Times Square takes 15 mins and is no problem, it's a scenic walk, you can route it to pass Rock Center, St Patricks, etc. if walking isnt your cup of tea, you can walk just 2 blocks from the Waldorf to Grand Central and take the shuttle (the S line on the subway). It's maybe 90 seconds on that to the center of Times Square.

Enjoy!

I usually keep a cancellable back up right until the window where I can cancel. Then start looking for last minute deals online. If I find one, I cancel. If not, just use the reservation.

The WA is just a few minutes from Timesquare by subway. You can also get on a bus and be there in ten minutes.
My concern would be the size of the rooms. If it's just one night and you won't be in the room except to sleep, shouldn't be too much of an issue. Most hotel rooms in Manhattan are tiny.
