We had sat nav last year. We were just handed it in a travel pouch and shown where to clip it on the car but no real explanation was given. However, it was the first time we had driven in the USA and not knowing the routes we found it a godsend especially as we had a few days on the Gulf Coast! It was easy to use and had most of the places we wanted to go programmed in. However, on one occasion it did take us to the wrong place although it was after we had got our bearings a little and we knew it was going to the wrong place so we reprogrammed it. Ours was through Dollar.

Hi Ruth

We always rent cars with satnav when we go to the US (we rent through Hertz they have a satnav system called Neverlost). Infact we both now have (built-in) satnav on our cars in the UK.

It is incredibly useful and always gets us to where we are going.

Hertz doesn't explain how to use it - they just give you the car keys and off you go, but it is INCREDIBLY simple to use: there are both simple onscreen instructions and a little instruction card dangling from satnav unit.

Although it has directories in it, the best way to find anything by having the address of where you want to go in the form of "number" "street" "city" (i.e. "999, Main St, Kissimee"). I always have that information for our hotels/villas/restaurants etc before we go anywhere in the US. Some of the bigger hotels will be listed in a directory on the satnav system, but I never like to leave it to chance.

We wouldn't be without a satnav system somewhere we didn't know - they are great.
