We're renting from National in Tampa and dropping off at the Car Care Center with total rental days of 14. Trying to keep all costs down, I was planning to rent an Economy sized car. Recent renting experience has given us an assortment of cars to choose from, so we were thinking that we might get a larger car, BUT we've never rented economy. We're okay with small, but we're worried that 2 small children and 4 carry on bags and a double stroller and potential groceries won't fit in a chevy aveo. I've never noticed smaller cars at the rental places, so I don't know what to expect. Anyone have experience with this?

How far are you driving? Short distance you can put the carryon bags on your lap or on the floor.

You need to upgrade to at least midsize before you'll have a car that might have enough trunk space for what you need. Depending on your code the cost to upgrade may be minimal.

I haven't rented from National, but my wife and I have always rented economy cars... until the last time. In the past, we'd get a stripped down Neon or something similar, but the last time we rented a car (December 2008) we were given a hatchback Toyota Yaris. There wasn't enough room in the car for 2 of us, my 9 year old brother in law, and our luggage. The "economy" car didn't even have a trunk. We ended up having to upgrade as a result.

If you're concerned, I would find out specifically beforehand what their economy cars are and then determine whether to upgrade.
