Anyone REALLY familiar with the Home Depot paint department?

We found a color in the Behr selection that we absolutely love (and agree on! :worship:)

It's for our bathroom, and we want to use oil-based paint. Behr doesn't make oil based paint :headache: but Glidden does.

If we bring the Behr sample to Home Depot, can they look up the color formulation and apply it to Glidden?

Can I ask why you want to use an oil based paint on an interior surface? The smell would be near unbearable.

As for the color, if you have a color sample you like, take it to Home Depot and they can use the computer to match it and mix it in the paint of your choice.

We have painted our bathrooms and never used oil based paint? What's the reason for that, just curious if I'm missing something. :confused3

Anyway, Home Depot like Lowes has a machine that matches any color sample-fabric, paper swatch, etc. So they definitely should be able to match the paint color. I know people do this with, for example, a Sherwin Williams color that they want to replicate in a cheaper brand of paint.

Once I was trying to match a color of ceiling beams, I chipped off a little piece of the wood and brought it in, they put it on the machine and it matched the color pretty well!!

Good luck with the project!

:rotfl: I don't mind it much! We have a moisture issue (we have a window in that bathroom, but no fan, so no ventilation in winter months... oil-based was recommended to us.)

Yup, they will scan anything and match the color. We recently did DD's room matching a pillow she liked the color of.

You might want to look into a paint that has mold inhibitor in it. I don't know the name but I've read about it.

Yep, but my suggestion would be to have all the gallons mixed at the same time, so you know the consistancy.

When I painted my bedroom a light blue, I bought 1 gallon at a time, and didn't have an issue. but the thought crossed my mind a few times. Of course I was using paint samples of the brand i bought.

Actually if you want the best paint, go with a milk based paint. Stinks to high hell, but it'll keep it's color for a very long time, even with the moisture.

Have you thought about installing a fan?? My g'father installed a light/fan/heater in the bathroom and it was always nice to hit the heat on to warm it up in the mornings.

Oh, we've thought about it, but the cost would be more than we are willing to spend right now. Our attic above the bathroom is just too hard to move around in, and is FULL of that blown insulation.

We too have a bathroom with a window but no exhaust fan. We never open the window (between my allergies and my lack of desire to give the neighbors a free show, that just doesn't seem like a good option). We painted our bathroom with Sherwin-Williams Duration paint. It's anti-microbial and so far looks great even being in our steamy bathroom. It hasn't chipped either so far (we bought our house a little over 1.5 years ago). It's low odor, so it might be an alternative to oil-based paint for you.

Thanks a lot! We will look into this! :thumbsup2

Does it dry fast?

We used a Behr paint that is specifically made to be used in bathrooms, laundry rooms, etc. I can't remember the name but I'm sure any experienced sales person could help you at Home Depot.

OP, I am all about oil based paint. We used it on our kitchen cabinets 2 years ago. It is white and so I am constantly washing it. There is very little wear. Actually the wear we do have makes it look more like a distressed finish which people pay good money for, LOL. Also had the oil based paint on the trim throughout the house. It still looks great. I did not notice a smell at all.

It's been awhile, but when I asked Home Depot to match a Ralph Lauren color for me, it was a no go since they carried RL paint. Their darn computer was so good it recognized the formula as being a RL blend.

Lowes had no problem doing a color match for me, but I wouldn't say it was exact, although it was pretty close.

Good Luck

If you are going to buy a couple gallons of paint get a five gallon container and mix all the paint in that. Everything will then be the same.
