Anyone own a Westie???

My mom got a West Highland Terrier a few months back. She should be called a West Highland Terror instead - she's a maniac. Does anyone have one of these crazy little dogs? Can you offer any advice? Do they ever get better??? She just graduated from Petsmart Puppy School, but I think they just pushed her through. She definitely was NOT the class valedictorian!

Friends of ours have one, and he is the sweetest little thing I've ever seen! I guess dogs are like people, and they all have their own personality.

I also call mine a West Highland White Terror. He's such a pain in the ***. He loves to bark. Your Mom might as well just give up and realize that this little dog is going to rule her life until it dies.

It's impossible to ignore a Westie, or to stifle one.

Mine also has bad allergies and tends to lose most of his hair in the summer. I tell people he's a West Highland White Hairless Chihuahua.

Someone I work with has one and he is very sweet. Maybe it will calm down soon. I hope so.

Mine is 3 and he has calmed down a little, but he still barks a lot.

Well this is a mixed bag of responses. I guess we'll just have to keep our fingers crossed and hope this maniac dog calms down eventually. She's a barker, a biter and very, very stubborn. You call her, she walks in the opposite direction. Thanks for all the advice and keep those responses coming.

Our close friends have one and she's also pretty well behaved. She is somewhat persistant. For example she sleeps in their laundry room and stays there when they are out too. They had to stack baby gates because she learned to climb just one.

My boss has three and the are the cutest dogs. Hers are well behaved but she did say her and her husband had to work hard with them when they were puppies. They still like to bark at any little noise but the command "quiet" usually works. Good luck training yours.

My sister has two show "westies". They are hyper little dogs but hers are well-behaved. Did your mother get her dog from a westie breeder? I will have to ask her what she thinks of the breed and how easy they are to train.

My mom got her from a Westie breeder. She met the parents who both seemed well behaved. The funniest part is, when she got the dog, the woman who sold it to her told her she had 2 females. One aggressive, one passive, she told my mom she was giving her the passive one since she wouldn't be playing alot of rough and tumble games with kids. She would be more suited to an older person's home. Hate to see what that aggressive one is like these days.
