Anyone own a small amount of points?

I'm trying to convince my parents to purchase a contract with 50 pts or less. They are looking to stay at AKL and will pay a pretty penny per night. I was telling them they should buy a small contract and use the points for their trip plus they would be upgrading from a regular 'ol room to a studio. For their stay they would need 68 pts. I told them buy 50pts and borrow the 18 from next year.

Is this crazy?

They are huge Disney fans and travel to WDW at least every-other-year plus they do at least a week-long cruise (DCL) every year.

I think it is a great idea. There are people who do this all the time. I don't know when there trip is but if they have time to buy in via resale, it still might be possible.

Resale takes about 2 months from start to finish but if they are long time Disney fans, this would be a great way for them to save on future trips.

Now, if they added on through Disney (which they are allowing currently new members in for 100 points), they would have points quickly and may even be able to get the guide to secure them the reservation they need at AKV.

While using DVC points for the cruise is not always the best option, with the 100 points, they may be able to do their every other year trips to AKV and then pay for one of them using points on the years they cruise (or, just rent out those extra points or let others use them).

Good luck!

We own 29 points at VWL. With soon to be three kids in college it was all we could afford. We use it to tack in extra days to week long trips at an offsite timeshare. We hope to add on more someday. Personally I love owing DVC and with banking and borrowing a few points can go a long way. I think you should encourage them to look into it.

we have 100 points. We like to stay in a 1 bed and when we go it usually costs us 160. we bought a contract that had 100 banked points so between that and borrowing it help us though a few trips but it has caught up with us now and we need more points lol.

if they go everyother year than 50 points would do them fine. do they usually travel at free dining or book under any other promotions? That is something to consider as dvd doesn't get free dining. I would take dvc over fd anyday though. We love being members....even if we are point challenged.

Good luck

Hi neighbor!!! We live in Severn and are in Annapolis ALL THE TIME. :thumbsup2 I agree...I would get a small contract if they go at least every other year.

Small World Denise! Thanks for posting and saying "Hi."

I just spoke with my mom and read her everyone's posts. She is definitely looking into it! Now if I could just make my own decision. With 4 kids, a small contract won't work for us. And a big contract is such a big chunk of change to plunk down.

Keep the info coming! Jen

I have two VB contracts. One for 100 and one for 50 points. All my other contracts, except for OKW, are for 100 points each. Therefore, I have a zillion contracts.

We have 65 OKW points which is just enough to go 4 days a year or we bank / borrow to go for a week, plus we like to go in the Fall so it takes fewer points to go.

We have a 100pt contract at OKW. A studio has worked for us (DH, DW, DS6, DD 3) since we bought and will for the foreseeable future. We go every year for at least a week (in value season)... we're creative with banking/borrow, changing resorts etc.. and 100pts is plenty for us... so there's no reason 50pts shouldn't work if they go every other year.

My DH are looking at small resales <50, but were wondering if this is a good idea or not. We travel to Disney 2x/year for short trips so a smaller contract looks like it would work best for us. Glad to read the positive responses.
