I was wondering if it works like a walkman/mp3 player that i can listen to it no matter where I am. With a walkman I can be locked inside a house with no windows and still listen to music. Before I pay $$$ bor the S50 I wnt to make sure that I dont have to always be near a window or out in the open to get reception....Thanks

I was confused on what kind of Sirius unit to get. By the time I figured out that a Starmate would work for me it was too late. I could not find one anywhere. The only unit they had was the $$$ S50. I was tempted to get it (gotta have my HS in the morning) but after reading about it you still need a docking station at home and in the car to get live Sirius.

I thought it was portable meaning you can take the little unit anywhere and listen to live Sirius..that is not true you can record Sirius (or songs) and take it with you jogging..etc without the docking station. (this is what I found out , I think it is correct)

I finally found a Starmate in a little electronics store the guy said he just got 10 in and had 2 left. I was lucky..I had it hooked up and ready to play in 15 minutes. Signing up is so easy on the web.

Do a search on Sirius or S50 there were a few threads about it a while ago.

Good luck

Here is a great site with awesome information. The forums are particulary helpful... www.siriusbackstage.com

The S50 is not fully portable yet. It has to be docked to receive and record Sirius programming. You can also download MP3s to the unit. The rumor is that the S50 will become fully portable sometimes within the next year (we'll see). I really want an S50 (even without it being fully portable at this point) but there are still too many bugs for my liking.

Fully portable satellite radio receivers are a strange breed. With technology where it is today, it's still not an easy thing to create. Even the XM fully portable unit has many issues if you are not out in the open. Reception can be terrible (if at all existent).

We have the Sportster Replay in DH's truck and in our home. We really like it.

I found this post on the $$$ S50:

Yes, but it's not totally ideal.

The Sirius S50 can record up to 4 hours of broadcasts to internal memory, which you can then listen to any time without a sat. signal.

You can set up timers like a VCR to record various shows.

The S50 itself cannot receive a satellite signal - it requires a docking station to play a "live" signal or record a show.

The silly thing with the S50 is that it comes with a car docking station. That's great if you want to listen while driving, but the purpose of the S50 was to allow you to record and listen later. If your car is turned off, unless you want to drain the battery, you are not going to be recording in your car.

So you need to fork out another $100 to get the home docking station.

Still, if they would lower the price a little I'd think about getting it. I would record music and shows at night, then take the S50 with me to work and listen to them during the day. Some of the live shows during the day replay at night, so you'd be a day behind, but that's life with satellite...
