Anyone own a franchise?

I am thinking of looking into opening a franchise(specifically an ice cream store) and wanted to see if anyone out there can share their experiences in owning a franchise. Things like researching the companies, going to the trade shows, ect..

I know there are a lot of variables that determine profit and success but I want to get an informed opinion from someone that owns a franchise about how to go about it and if they think it was worth it in the end after paying all the franchise royalties(initial and ongoing).
