I owned three really special boys for about 4 years, until I began to have allergic reactions every time I touched them. I ended up having to give them to someone else who is a ferret veteran, and I miss them so much... but I was even getting to the point of not being able to breathe if I was around them for too long... really hard to do in this one bedroom apartment! I'm not sure why I don't have the same reaction to the cat
I just inherited one with my new step kids (recently married) it seems sweet enough and all and generally a good pet, but awefully smelly. Does anyone know if its ok to bath these things? Or is the odor just their natural musk that they give off making baths not worth it?

Make sure you are feeding a high quality food--I suggest Totally Ferret, 8&1 Ultimate, or The Ferret Store food. If it smells bad going in, it will smell worse coming out. I use a combination of the above three mixed together and toss in a little Iams kitten as a treat.
Make sure that you wash their sleep sacks, play mats, tents, hammocks, etc. every week. Those absorb the ferrets natural oils, and if the bedding is kept clean the ferret will keep itself clean.
If that doesn't help, take the ferret to the vet, it could be an indication of adrenal disease or a yeast infection in the ears.
