Anyone made the DSLR jump?

3) I've seen great pictures taken with point and shoots and horrible ones taken with SLRs. The camera doesn't make the picture, the photographer does. The SLR will give you more tools and options, but if you only shoot auto, you are missing the true range of it.

I know that is true, that is why I can't decide which way to go. I did use the advanced features on my old camera, but there is so much more on the new PnS I can't decide. I swear I may spend more time on this than I did planning our Disney trip.

Hmmm, if you DID use the advanced features on your old camera, then you'll probably enjoy a DSLR. I started out using a Nikon Coolpix when they first came out. Then I got a Konica Minolta and started using the manual features. By the time I got my DSLR, I knew I wanted faster, better, I wanted more!! There is no denying the speed of a DSLR and once you get one, you'll never go back to a point and shoot. At least I won't. Yes, it can be a little bulkier, but if you enjoy shooting then it's worth the extra weight.

Cannons are good for fast shooting, Nikons are good for higher quality. A good 17-80mm lens is good for every day shooting. And you might want to get a 24-100mm lens for sporting events.

Canon and Sony have both good cameras for point and shoot, but loading time is a killer compared to a SLR. I'm also a fan of Fuji cameras. It was one of the first digital cameras that I got back in like 03 and have had one ever since. It's a little bit of a pain because accessories are hard to come by. Fuji is not the most popular, but they do share a lot with Olympus.

I handled a lot of cameras working in photopass from the cheapies to cameras that probably cost half my yearly salary.

I think it's B&H in New York that is a very very popular camera store. It was recommended by my managers in photopass. A couple photographers that visited NYC actually got to tour the whole place.

I can tell you that our point and shoot Canon has 14 features (including color swap, sport, foliage, etc) that we use all the time. It will also do fast shutter photos, taking 3 at one time. It's almost the same as a slr camera, without the bulk and weight. Oh and we have a film slr camera and my husband has taken classes on photography. He loves this Canon.

I made the jump a month ago to a Pentax K-X. You wouldn't believe the difference in speed - shutter lag. I'm finally getting those soccer pictures I was always missing!

Yes, there is a large learning curve. I'm not there yet (shooting in manual -- I'm sticking with AV for now) but I did take a class at our local college and it's helping. I don't think I'll ever go back to a P&S. I'm really loving my new camera!

Good luck in your search! What's right for one is not right for another so make sure whatever camera you purchase is comfortable for you to handle. Try out a ton and then make your decision.

My point and shoot takes such good pictures that they have been in newsletters. I take a lot of indoor swimming pictures and most are low light, too. This camera can take them very well.
