I have to go to Harrison NJ to drop my sons car off so it can be shipped to Germany.
My mom is going with me and we decided it would be fun to take a couple days and visit NYC.
Where would be some good areas to stay (fairly inexpensive), but would also give us easy access into the city.
I'd love to stay right there in the heart of the big apple, but I think its a little out of my price range. ;)
Thanks!

Can't really help you, as I'm not sure which hotels around NYC have transportation to the city. I know there is a new Hilton on Staten Island--I'm not sure about prices/transportation though...but you will TECHNICALLY be in NYC! haha
Other than that--not really sure where Harrisson is, but there are LOTS of hotels in Jersey with all different rates.
Just wanted to bump this up so maybe someone else can help!

I leave near Harrision Township but that is in South Jersey about 2 hours from NYC. I am hoping that you are headed to a differeent Harrison that is in North Jersey??

Harrison is between Newark and Jersey City. It's on the Path train line into Manhattan. There are a few hotels in Jersey City that would give you easy access to Manhattan but I'm not sure they'd be any cheaper than Manhattan. Depending on when you're going many hotels in the city offer special deals (i.e. weekends and summer) when business travel is down. I'd suggest looking at www.tripadvisor.com . You can look at hotel reviews and check rates on several different search engines (Expedia & Orbitz for instance). Once you find a few hotels that you like in your price range I'd also suggest checking their own websites for deals. I've often gotten better deals at www.hyatt.com than from Expedia.

You can also check out the Meadowlands area in Rutherford. There are lots of hotels there and I'm guessing that they have cheaper weekend rates as most are used for business. Very easy ride into Midtown via the Lincoln Tunnel near by.

Good Luck and welcome to North Jersey!

Thanks for your help....I knew I could count on you all! My mom was sooo excited when I asked her t go. The girls in NYC....watch out all! LOL BTW.....she just adores Disney too!

We will probably leave on June 21 or 22 and spend 2 nights, 3 if its affordable. This realy isn't the best time for me to take an impromtu trip since I have one vacation in July I just booked (going camping at Jellysone) and then hopefully another trip to Disney in Feb. That's why I'm trying to make it affordable, but fun!

So....affordable tips?
Also, would we be better off taking the subway around instead of driving? Would it be safe to do?

As Tony said there are lots of hotels in the Meadowlands area (right before the Lincoln Tunnel). I know there is a Red Roof there that runs about $80 a night. The Crown Plaza is also right there, but they are more expensive (and it's not that great of a hotel IMHO).
