I have this fabulous ham bone with lots of ham left on it and was wondering if anyone has any great ideas. I need details...I can cook...but not stuff like that...lol. TIA for any help.

I think you use a ham bone to make pea soup. I don't like pea soup though.

Put it in some water with a bag of split peas, chopped carrot, onion, a bay leaf, salt and pepper. Bring to a boil, then cook on simmer for about 3 hours. Remove the bone and the bay leaf, shred the meat.

Serve with a giant loaf of Italian bread, and Amish butter!

My favorite use of a ham bone. If you don't like split peas, you could use Great Northerns. Not exactly the same, but still Good Eats!

Yep, either pea soup or bean soup are great with a ham bone. I don't have either recipe handy but you can check online for some easy ones.

I love beans of all varieties, and I do a very similar thing, except I use the slow cooker typically. I often use navy beans (dried or from the can).

You can also freeze it to use for the New Year's lucky dish of black eyed peas, or hoppin' john. Mmmm. Would be wonderful in any bean soup. I use basically noodleknitter's recipe, except I use chicken broth instead of water, and add celery and LOTS of garlic.

If we use navy beans, I usually precook them in the slow-cooker overnight. This simple procedure has my whole family eating more beans. Wish I knew about it years ago!

That would be wonderful for a Split Pea Soup or any type of bean soup.

Just get a package of Goya dried split peas ( I only specify Goya because I know there is a very good and very easy recipe on the back of the bag). Any brand will do though.

Follow the directions on the back ... simple, delicious and very good for you.

In case you can not find the Goya brand with the recipe on the back, here is a very similar recipe :

I also add some chopped garlic and a bay leaf (remember to remove it after cooking) and 4 to 6 chicken boullion cubes. I cook mine a long time so the peas actulally cook all the way down.

Good luck ! :thumbsup2

My mother used them to make the most delicious pea soup! Unfortunately, she never taught me the recipe :sad2:

Honeybaked sells a bean/seasoning mix to make soup with the ham bone. I've bought the mix before and it makes one delicious soup! :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

If I had one I'd give it to the dog. :teeth:

I don't like pea or bean soup so wouldn't know what else to do with it.

I make split pea soup for DH and my Dad with it. I supposedly make it really well, but I hate the taste of it so go figure

How bout a big old pot of red beans and rice, then a loaf of french bread and a nice green salad to go with? Yuuuummmmm...making my stomach growl.

Pintos...Wow, I'm country. Yikes. Not that I've ever made them or know how, but that's what my parents always did with the ham bone, or saved it (from Christmas) for New Year's to eat with Black Eyed Peas.
