Anyone know someone who had a stem cell transplant?

I think I would seriously consider it even if the drug works and she gets to a healthy spot.....that might be a good time for the transplant. Everyone I know has had it work .

I know this isn't directly realted to lupus in anyway, but I just read somewhere (People maybe) that Ethan Zohn (from Survivor fame) had his stem cell transplant 3 weeks ago, and he blogged the entire time. It might be interesting to follow the blog to see how he reacted & responded to it. I don't know the site for the blog, sorry. Best wishes & good luck to your sister.

My neighbor had one to treat her lymphoma. She has been cancer free for over 2 years now. The process was difficult, but the results were worth it. Good luck to your sister.

My MIL had one 13 years ago for stage 4 metastisized breast cancer. It was so hard to watch how sick the chemo made her, but it really was the only option she had. She lived 8 more months after the transplant, but ultimately died from the damage to the lungs caused by her treatments during the transplant. The high dose chemo is very hard on the lungs. Now, remember this was 13 years ago, so I would think that has been improved on. Something to ask about, though. Her transplant was done at Duke, by the way.

We have a good friend that had a stem cell transplant for his lymphoma about 10 years ago, had the transplant in early June, was golfing with us on 4th of July. He has been cancer free since.

Wishing your sister a lot of good luck. pixiedust:

They make advances with this treatment every day.

My neighbor was heating hot water in a bowl and then added Vicks to it and it sprayed into her eyes and blinded her.
She waited about 2 years for the scars to heal and then they did a stem cell transplant on her.
She has vision in her eye now, not 20/20 but she can see clearly with glasses.
She is very religious and when contacted by papers to get an interview she refused because of the church controverys but she did say she would do it again if she had to.

Regarding stem cells, I know the previous posters are speaking of REAL doctors and hospitals, but BEWARE of the fraudsters out there who are preying upon the desperate...

Sadly, a high school classmate of mine and her boyfriend fled to South Africa in an attempt to avoid prosecution on 51 counts of fraud by a US Federal grand jury.

Over many years, she and her boyfriend were injecting people in the gut with cord blood stem cells, which were for lab research only. Neither of these people had any medical training! Charging tens of thousands of dollars for a treatment, these connivers swindled millions and millions of dollars from hundreds, perhaps thousands, of people.

A doctor in the UK was just charged in a very similar scam, I believe.

Google "Steven van Rooyen and Laura Brown." It is terribly sad, what they have been doing. I hope there is a special place in hell for people like this.

Oh thanks, but this isn't a fetal stem cell transplant. They would be her own, or from a donor, like a bone marrow transplant.

thanks everyone!

My late FIL had a stem cell transplant to treat his Leukemia. Unfortunately, he developed an infection and passed away.

I truly wish your sister the best of luck, as I know people who have had them for other reasons and they worked perfectly. My aunt is also considering having one at this time for the condition she has.

My SIL had a stem cell transplant last Feb. 3 to put her in remission from her multiple myeloma. She was very sick from the chemo, but did great with the transplant. She was only in the hospital about two weeks, and was able to come home (from M.D. Anderson cancer hospital) after only a month. It took her about four months to begin feeling decent. The remission only lasted ten months though, and her cancer is back now. MM is treatable, but is not curable. The doctors took enough stem cells last year for two more transplants, so she will be having another one in the future.

Best of luck to your sister.
