Anyone know moving costs??

Hi-- my DH was laid off about five weeks ago and is in the process of interviewing...

Does anyone know how much it costs to move? The one opportunity that is looking promising is about an hour away from our house. So.. we would have to move (we live in a four bedroom, 1900 square feet house) about 50 miles away.

I was so hoping to hire movers that will come and pack for me. The last move I did the whole house by myself and it was not fun.

Just wondering if anyone has moved lately and might know the cost??

We just moved from FL to NC. I think overall it ended up costing us about $3000. We didn't have movers or help packing. We had a POD. We loved it! They dropped it off, we filled it up and they took it away and stored it until we had a house 4 months later. I'm including things like gas, buying boxes and tape, cost of the POD, cost to store the POD, etc etc etc every little thing I can think of into the $3000.

Is the company willing to help with the costs? Are you an owner or a renter?

An hour is a long commute? I've had twice that!

The most expensive choice is the one where they do the packing. Do you have a local search with reviews that can tell you about their experiences about moving? I use Kudzu.com It's how I found the movers I've used for my last 3 moves, they had awesome reviews.

If not check with friends about any movers they trust. There are some NIGHTMARE movers out there, and some excellent ones. Good references are important.

Some movers give you a rate based on how and what you're moving. Others charge by hour no matter what you're moving. Rates vary considering the steps they have to climb, how many stops they have to make, etc. Get SEVERAL quotes.

BTW, I do my own packing, get my boxes for free from the grocery store and hire a mover that is $100 an hour for 3 hours = $300. My most expensive move was moving from NY to Atlanta, $3,000 20 years ago.

If it's that close I would just pack myself up slowly and rent a uhaul trailer every weekend for like $30 and store it in the area you are moving to.

I'm in the process now of moving to Florida from NH. Since I am waiting for the house to sell I am packing at my own pace and sticking it in a local storage unit. When it's time to go we'll probably just rent a big moving truck and grab the stuff we are bringing from the house and what we have in storage and go.

We've never made such a short move, but professional (Allied, United, etc)movers will give you a free estimate. If you're considering having the pros pack for you they can sure give you a good idea of what kind of cost you're looking at.

If the company is paying, by all means let them pack your stuff. You can purchase insurance and if anything is damaged you'll have some recourse.

Why do the hassle of moving for only an hour away ?? My Dh and plenty of other people I know DH's work more than an hour away. Mine commutes 2 hrs each way to work. You could live 25 miles out side Boston and still have it take more than an hour to get to work on some days. If I were you and the job was that close, I would stay put and not go thru with the hassle of house hunting, closing costs, moving costs, and uprooting the children. It wouldn't be worth it. Dh and I didn't even discuss the thought of moving when he started this job last year.

Original poster here..He doesn't have the job yet (and may not get it..), but it would be about 50 miles one way. I know that a lot of people commute an hour or more each way.. but not usually here in Ohio...

50 miles is not a long commute at ALL-i drove 96 miles each way for three years. But i have done a realively short move. To get professional movers even for that move is going to be in excess of a 1000 dollars. A Uhaul for a day will cost you about 200.
Do you own your home? in this market honestly-why would he not commute?

LOL! Yeah, I was going to say, in So. CA, an hour is a good commute! My DH drives at least 45 miles to LA a couple times a week and 80 miles to San Diego once a week. Around here, you can live 20 miles from your job and still have an hour + commute!

Spending more than two hours a day in the car just driving to/from work seems insane to me...but I'm in Ohio, too. If I'm in Cleveland and spend two hours driving, I'd better end up in Toledo or something.

I don't think you're nuts to not want to spend that much time in the car every day. There are too many better things to do!

I think our movers were paid by the hour, so it depends on how many guys you need and how long they're there. You also pay more if you need a bigger truck, like a semi. And if you need two semis, that's even more.

It's a bunch more if they pack you, too. And maybe our packers just really sucked, but in the future, I'll pack myself. It's a big job, but at least the crap will be packed well. Geez, our packers sucked. So, I vote for saving yourself the money and the headache and just packing your crap up yourself.

I moved a couple of months ago (~100 miles... out of state) and did a combo of packing/moving myself and using movers. I moved all of my decorative items and things that I was afraid would break in my own car. Then I packed the rest of the house except the kitchen. The movers packed all of my dishes and small appliances -- well worth the time and effort it saved me... plus they knew what they were doing. Not one thing broken.

Costs will vary by area of the country.

My advice is to do a lot of research on a moving company and get references. The cheapest quote is not always the cheapest move in the long run (my move came in $300 less than the estimate... I found a great company... but they are in the DC area).

We've moved a lot and always do everything ourselves, including the actual moving. Sell everything you don't need, donate things that aren't sellable and move with as little as possible. It'll help you have a clean, fresh new start and it'll be much easier to move.

An hour (even in Ohio) is not bad. If you like where you are, it is not worth the time hassle and expense to move. It is difficult to move real estate anyway, especially in Ohio. Case in point, it took longer for my house in Ohio to sell instead of any other properties I have owned.

Hi Jen - I just moved from South Florida to Boston so a lot further than your 50 miles. We rented the largest Penske truck for $1099. We had movers come and load up the truck took 2.5 hours and cost me $150 for 3 hours and $40 for tip. We packed the boxes and house ourselves.

Overnight costs, gas and car shipping will obviously not factor into your costs. We had a 2 bedroom, 1400 sq. ft. apartment and had a completely full truck. If we do a big move again we will have to use commercial movers because we used the largest truck a consumer can drive themselves.

We would move. DH REFUSES to drive more than 30 minutes for a job. Luckily he's never had too. We'd either move, or he wouldn't even interview with the company to begin with. Not everyone can handle that kind of commuting. I wouldn't commute that far either. Anything more than 30-45 minutes is just ridiculous no matter where you are. I find it amusing that so many people think an hour is "not bad at all".

I would not move for a hour commute in this economy, unless I hated where I lived, knew I could sell my house without incident and the area where I was moving was cheaper.

We just moved from TX back to MO, and it cost us 7000. We had 4 moving trucks, storage sheds, hiring people here and there to load and unload. We had alot of stuff. We did move over a period of months, though.

Then you add the cost of selling the house and now the price goes up. With us we had to also include living in apartments after our house was sold while we looked for another one.

Moving is a huge debt to incur. If you have good luck and minimal stuff you can really keep the costs down.

Do you have any military bases in your area? When I moved, I packed myself, rented a uhaul for the day, and hired some Marines from the local Quantico Marine base. Many of them advertise on Craig's list. The entire move, including the Marines, truck, and tip was less than $500 (local move, about 25 miles).

(Having not read all the replies) How potentially stable is the new job assuming the economy doesn't get much worse? I'd hate to see anyone move just to see the job evaporate in 1-2 years. Can your husband tolerate commuting for a few months to a year? What if gets there and it's a terrible job? I'd not jump too quickly into moving. How quickly will your house sell?
