Hey. I'm thinking about applying for a job as a teacher's assistant at a Montessori academy and I was wondering if anyone knew anything about the hours, such as are they the same as regular school hours off in the summers and all of that? Thanks.

most montessori's are geared to the preschool set (though there are some that go through elementary-though at least in our area they are few and far between) so they generaly are open all year long with only legal holidays off (follow more of a daycare type of schedual) and open from around 7 am-6 pm for before and after school care.

if you've never been trained spec. in the montessori method you would do well to grab a book and get an overview of it. it is structured very differently teaching wise than non montessori (which is generaly based on piagetian theorys). you could also do a google search under maria montessori and learn about why they do things certain ways.

the position i would be applying for is an elementary assistant, ages 6-9 so I didn't know if it would be like a regular school year.

My DD7 is in a Montessori school (2nd grade) They have a regular shcool year (pretty much follow the county), but every school is probably different. Why don't you ask the school itself?

I just didn't want to seem picky. I did find an overview of the school online and it is a regular school year. I'm writing my cover letter right now. Thanks. :)

Good Luck. I really like the Montessori format. It is very structured, but the children really learn at their own speed and follow their own interests. My DD loves it (it is her first year there and I hope she continues to love it)

Do you have a Montessori certificate? When I applied to work for a Montessori school several years ago they turned me down because I wasn't certified. I don't know if they've changed the policy or not, but I wanted to let you know.

the ad didn't say anything about a certificate, just bachelors degree preferred. oh well it won't be the first job i've been turned down on. or the seventh....
