Wow- thanks for the great replys! I think the "cheap eats in Vegas" page I printed out will come in handy when we are there! We're staying at Treasure Island. We leave in the morning (Saturday) get out there at 1:45 pm. Rain in forecast for Sunday, 60% chance :( . Hope not.
Patti, thanks for offering to ask your advise. Can you tell me: if we want to go to Hoover Dam for Sunday, we thought about renting a car instead of taking a bus tour, is this the thing to do? Our thinking is then we can kinda drive around a little bit and see more of Las Vegas. On the other hand, a bus tour would be nice so we know where we are going :D and can relax and not drive. We're really undecided. So if you think we should get a car, where is a good place to rent one close to treasure Island? Also, if we take the bus, you probably wouldn't know which "tour" is the best ($) to do. A few years ago we took one from Ballys and it was great! A nice chartered bus and only about 15-20 people total on it- we didn't know anyone, but they were all funny and we ahd a great time. The tour guide was great. And if we rent a car, my hubby thought it would be neat to "drive up towards the top of a mountain" (we're from Indiana) and see the city from there. I bet those mountains are deceving in how far they are......so how far are they- 2 hours?
Soooo....while you are offering advise......would you recommend a show for us to see please? We want to see a "true Las Vegas Show" like Crazy Girls, or something like that, but then thought about seeing impersonators like Legends in concert at the Imperial Palace (or is it Riviera). Have you seen any show right around the $40-45.00 range that you'd recommend? Thought about seeing Bottoms Up at Flamingo for our "Las Vegas Show" (only $25.00) and then still seeing impersonators at Legends in Concert too. Undecided on that one, any help would be great! Anything else you can think of??? We'll be there from tomorrow at 1:45 pm until Tuesday am at 7:00 am. "help"

I would consider renting a car for a couple of reasons. If you desire to go to the dam, it is a short drive, 60 minutes travel time.
This would also let you tour the surrounding area and you would have the car to visit downtown and the Fremont experience in the evening.
The major car rental agencies have offices in many strip hotels. You can check the individual hotels or the car websites or call TI, they will know.
Two years ago, I rented a car for one day from Dollar at the Paris Hotel to do the above trip. Picked it up at 900am one morning and returned it the next morning. Costs about $30.
Have a great trip!

Well, I have to ask you this- how is parking in Vegas- I mean I've never driven in Las Vegas before, but I don't mind driving in larger cities, so that isn't the problem. I just mean is parking pretty easy for Fremont street and also are there meters there? You have to remember I come from a very small town and we are not used to the meter thing, so if so we all get a bit confused on those things and you know- you never want to ask someone cause you'll look silly...... just thinking of all possibilities here...... thanks, I think that is an excellent idea to rent one for a day like you did winterman. I didn't think about the Fremont Street thing. :D Thanks

You can rent a car right at TI. There is a rental car booth (can't remember which company) near the tram to the Mirage. It would probably be cheaper if you called the hotel, ask them which car company is on-site, then make a reservation on the web or call the car company. It would probably cost more to walk up and rent a car.

I'm glad you asked this question, because we are going to Vegas in April and I would love to find a message board for info (even tho we've been there many times).

Have fun!

You've chosen a great hotel! I worked at the TI Wedding Chapel for two years. You'll love it there! I've heard mixed reviews about the new show, if you do it, I'd suggest purchasing the premium seats, or allow 90 minutes prior to showtime to get a good spot from the gangway.

Rental car is right at TI, as mentioned. Based upon what you have said, I'd rent a car. Driving to the dam is under an hour, and it's a great tour. As for going to Mt. Charleston, it is approximately one hour from the Strip. Take 15N to 95N to the exit marked Mt. Charleston. it is BEAUTIFUL, and I suggest you have lunch at the Lodge---breaktaking view from the patio seating. NOTE: The Lodge, not the Hotel which is lower on the mountain! Another alternative is a side trip to Red Rock Canyon. Red Rock is about 45 minutes from TI, straight North on Charleston (two exits North of TI on I15). It's worth the trip. Parking at the hotels is GREAT, relatively convenient and FREE!!! Feel free to Valet (it is a rental!), just remember to tip $1-2!

Vegas revue shows: The Stratosphere has a passable afternoon show that is "free" with the purchase of a cocktail. It's a decent show, and it uses a piece of an afternoon, not an entire evening. Spend time at the Freemont Street Experience in the evening if you can. It's free and lots of fun---it's "old Vegas". The buffet at Main Street or the cafe in Golden Nugget are good eating choices Downtown. Crazy Girls is a good show, as is La Cage (both at the Riv).

OPENED 1/1/04!!! We now have a 1/2 price same-day ticket kiosk in town! It's next to the MGM on the Strip. Might be worth a try---I haven't tried it and don't know anyone who has, but it is supposed to be like Tickets Tickets Tickets in NYC!

Have fun and GOOD LUCK!!!

Patti

Barbary Coast is really good, and it's free. We stayed at BC in the fall but missed the show. If you haven't tried Casino Royale for gambling, I love it. Especially if you like to drink and like low table limits, $2 craps in the evening. It's right across the street from TI.

Mystere is great but closer to 100 bucks. Folies at the Trop is one of our favorites too. Also went to the comedy show at the Trop and had a blast. I love Vegas as much as Disney.

Barbary Coast has a great breakfast 3 bucks, but I think it ends 7am.

This might but more info than you wanted but we love Bertolini's in the Forum Shops at Ceasar's. My wife enjoyed having Margarittas at the Tequila Bar in Bally's at the rear of the casino.

Our first few trips to Vegas we rented a car and drove to the dam, enjoyed it but I could see where the bus would be comfortable.

Enjoy your trip!!!

the ticket place- can you tell me the name of it? By MGM, am I looking for a new building or is it in a strip mall place or what? Please let me know. Sounds like my kind of place! Do you know how much La Cage is? I'll definatley check out the ticket place and post on here how it worked out, what we saw, etc. thanks! I am going to bed very soon, and will check in the morning for your reply. Hopefully I'll catch it..... :)
I wish I could enjoy a margaritta at Bally's..... I am now 15 weeks pregnant, that is why we decided to definatley do LV soon- enjoy while we can just pick up and go! :)

Here's some info on the ticket place.

LAS VEGAS -- Last-minute discount tickets are a staple on Broadway, but in Vegas if you want to see a show you'll have to pay full price even if you slip in just before the curtain goes up. Now, a California based company is aiming to change that. Tickets2Nite has set up a booth in the Showcase Mall next to the Coca-Cola store that will feature same-day tickets for Vegas shows at half-price. For now the booth will only be featuring a few shows, varying per day and based upon availability, but more may be added if the service proves successful.

The booth will primarily be used to pump up attendance on less-popular shows, so don't expect to get half-price tickets to "O" on the day of the show. But if you're looking for a cheap alternative for an evening of entertainment, this could be the way to go.

Another ticket place.

Tix4Tonight located on the Las Vegas "Strip" at Harmon next to the Harley-Davidson Cafe is the hottest spot in town for any show for the evening. We sell tickets to fabulous Las Vegas shows at 50% of the box office price!
Every afternoon the shows send us tickets for that night's performances. Because the tickets are for the same day of the performance only, we can sell them to you at half price! We add the required taxes and a $3.00 service fee.

Tix4Tonight opens daily at 2:00 p.m. and stays open until 9:00 to sell both early and late show times. We recommend that you arrive early to receive the best show selection as tickets are first come first serve.

I haven't try either of these.
Ty

There's your answer! Let me know about Tickets2Nite. We are fortunate that we generally don't pay for shows, but I'm anxious to know what types of shows they list at half-price!

Take a gondola ride if you get a chance!!! HAVE FUN!

Patti

BTW---Bertolini's is a personal fave (best Caesar salad anywhere!), and try Cheesecake Factory if you get a chance! Both are in the Forum shops.

Well, I am back from my wonderful trip to Las Vegas safely. We had an excellent time, until the trip back. As you see, I am from Syracuse, IN and incase you've been completely locked in a dark room somewhere, you know we got hammered with snow while I was gone. So we were supposed to leave Vegas at 6:45 am and arrive to South Bend, In at 2:40 pm (IN time). Perfect- we can pick the kids up from school on the way home and be all rested for work on Wed-right? Well, we left Vegas at around 9:30 and got into O'Hare and all South Bend flights were cancelled. Great! So we got tickets for Fort Wayne. Long story short- we flew out of OHare at about 7:30 pm and landed in Ft Wayne a little after 9 IN time. I finally got back to my house at 2:20 am. Just about 12 hours later than I wanted. BUT I sure feel fortunate to be home- there was a packed airport with people who had been trying to get to their destination for DAYS. Lucky we weren't far- so we optioned to renting a car to get to So Bend, and if we'd of known how many times they were going to delay and delay and delay we would've.
ANYWAY, on with the trip report. Tix4Tonite is a great place- I am sure the other one inside the Coke store entrance is great too, but we bought our Crazy Girl tix at Tix4Tonite. It is all for real- I mean they had a great selection of shows- including Mystere and I can't remember the name of the other higher dollar show- not O but another one- anyway- they are all 1/2 off or sure close to it. Very nice selection to choose from. They have it set up pretty nice. Scrolling titles on computer screens and then you just get in line after you decide what you want. Easy. When we were there they weren't busy at all. Very small place and was leary about buying tickets at first. We just got tickets for Crazy Girls and that is it.We had to go to the hotel to the box office and exchange our voucher tickets for actual tickets 45 minutes to 1 hour before the show. Which was no big deal to do- it made us get there early anyway. Not sure if its that way for all of them or not.
Now- Crazy Girls......what I wanted was to see a great Las Vegas Show with feather hat things on their heads and singing and dancing and kinda a "rocket" kind of thing in Vegas. What I got was a glorified strip show on a tiny tiny stage that felt like you were in a basement seeing something illegal. The show was good, so I don't mean it wasn't, cause it is so advertised heavy in Vegas, it WAS good, but certainly not what I expected. Lip syncing and practically nude the whole time- I wasn't real impressed by it. Luckily I got the tix for $22.00 each instead of $44.00 each! I'd of been pretty mad at myself if I would've paid full. Other than that- some eating place we ate at- the Buffet at Treasure Island was pretty good- it was free in our package we got. We ate at The Upper Deck in Las Vegas Club downtown. That was really good for the price. I had a great Prime Rib Dinner for $9.95. Hubby got all you can eat ribs for same price. 4-6 PM everything on the menu is 1/2 off. We were there at 6:30. :( Didn't eat anywhere else to really brag about. Had a great time and weather was wonderful.
Any questions- let me know. :D
