Is anyone interested in my trip report from February?

129013422.jpg

I'm a newbie, so please be kind

Newbies Unite!!!!

Do it with speed and alacrity, please.

Judging by your Mr. Potato Head, I would say your report is going to both rock and roll.

Here's some inspiration:

Do it! I'm a newbie who hasn't gotten the courage up yet. Do it for me!

The characters, only two ... Janie (me) and Norb (my hubby).

We went to Disney World once, 17 or 18 years ago.

I admit we are not Disney addicts, we are Mexico addicts. We've been to Mexico 18 times, and we are going back next week.

But variety is the spice of life, so we decided to see what was going on in Florida.

A little background of our week before our trip ...
(don't fall asleep during this part)

Norb's sister, Helen, fell last June and broke her hip.
Helen was always very independent, and she was living alone in an apartment.
After surgery and rehab it was decided that she could not live alone anymore.
She was quite frail and weak.
She needed help with bathing and dressing, and she was no longer able to cook for herself.

We told her she had two choices, go into a nursing home or come and live with us.

Helen chose to live with us ... I think it was only because I serve wine with dinner.

My husband is retired, so he would keep her company during the day.

Nursing homes have "respite care" for when the caregivers want a break or a vacation.
When we went to Mexico in November Helen went to a nursing home for a week.
So we had made arrangements for her to go again while we went to Disney World.

We were leaving for Florida on February 3rd.

On January 27th, while I was at work, Helen suffered a stroke.
Norb called 911, and she was taken to the hospital.

She was in the Neuro Intensive Care Unit for 3 days, but it didn't look too promising.
On Sunday Norb and I sat with her for over 8 hours.
That night our dear Helen passed away.

The funeral was scheduled for Thursday, and we were leaving on Friday.
I kept asking Norb if he wanted to cancel or postpone the trip, but he insisted we go.

After the week we had, running back and forth to the hospital, and two days at the
funeral home, and then the funeral, he thought we needed a break.

So we buried Norb's beloved sister, and after the wake we returned home to quickly pack,
and take care of all those last minute details.

Our minds weren't really thinking about vacation, and Norb forgot to pack any shirts!

Mi amiga, Tricia (RVGal), emailed me lots of Disney tips.
She has been there 40 ... yes 40 ... times!
What a fanatic! I can't understand people who keep returning to the same place over and over
and ... oops! Never mind! :teeth:

Tricia said to me, "I pay Mickey to make me forget the real world for awhile".

She was absolutely right ...Disney is such a fantasy world that we managed to forget our sadness for a little bit.

:surfweb: So ... on with my report ...

Friday morning we were up early and off to the airport at 6:15 a.m. in the rain.

We wore our Steeler jerseys, and we were treated like celebrities!

People at the Pittsburgh airport were hollering, "GO STEELERS" and giving us the thumbs up.
Some people were saying, "Have fun!"
Apparently those goofs thought we were going to Detroit. :confused3

I was wearing my Jerome Bettis jersey, and at the security checkpoint the guy said, "Hey, Mrs Bettis!"

OH LOOK! It's one of my favorite Steelers, Franco Harris, he's come to the airport to see us off ...

128809135.jpg

We had a terrible flight, it was the choppiest flight we've ever been on.
Lots of turbulence due to storms.

The lady sitting in back of us was hollering for a barf bag. :sad2:

My stomach was in my throat, and there was no chance of sleeping.
Thank goodness it was only a 2 hour flight.

We landed in Orlando, and it was pouring rain.
What the heck is this? ... Isn't Florida supposed to be the Sunshine State? :sunny:

When we arrived in Orlando we got quite a welcome,
people hollering, "GO STEELERS!"
and 'HEY, PITTSBURGH, GOOD LUCK!"

All through the airport people were giving us the thumbs up :thumbsup2 and waving to us.

We loved all the support for our Steelers!

Disney resorts provide a Magical Express bus to take you from the airport to your hotel.
They also get your luggage, and it magically appears in your room ...
we didn't have to go to baggage claim ... NICE!

So we got on the bus, and in about 30 minutes we arrive at our hotel, Port Orleans - French Quarter.

The lobby ...

128809101.jpg

Checked in, room 3129 ...

128766664.jpg

Nice room with a small refrigerator, double sinks ... all the usual amentities, iron, ironing board,
clock radio, hair dryer, coffee maker, etc.

128766661.jpg

I loved the soaps ...

128873196.jpg

The wrapper was printed with Mickey's face and the phrase,
"Everybody neat and pretty? Then on with the show!"

(I repeated that phrase to Norb many, many, many times over the next few days in my
best "Minnie Mouse" squeaky voice, but he was not amused :teeth: )

Now, you probably have to be as old as me to remember THE MICKEY MOUSE CLUB,
but I loved that show.

Good thing we had plastic ponchos from the Dollar Store.
Here's a helpful hint ... don't ever leave home without them!

We put on our ponchos, and took a walk around the hotel.

The Gift Shop, cause you're never leaving Disney World with any money left in your wallet ...

128873198.jpg

Here's the entrance to the pool, it's still raining ...

128809133.jpg

Decided to get some lunch.
The hotel has one restaurant, so it's an easy choice of where to eat ...

128766622.jpg

It's like a big food court, with different stations serving different things, one for pasta, one for desserts, etc.
I had chicken quesidillas, and Norb had a burger and fries.
It was okay. It was amusement park food, need I say more?

We decided to go to Downtown Disney and Pleasure Island, and hopped the Disney bus.
Walked around for about 37 miles in the pouring rain.

A place to rent boats ...

128809131.jpg

These dogs are made entirely of LEGO's ...

128809129.jpg

and, so is this creature in the water ...

128766634.jpg

We went to Wolfgang Puck for dinner, chicken fingers, fries and Sam Adams beer.
Then we walked about 37 more miles around Pleasure Island ...

128809128.jpg

Pleasure Island is where all the clubs are ... House of Blues, Planet Hollywood, Bongos, etc,
it's the Disney World for adults looking for alcohol.

Everywhere we went people were yelling, "GO STEELERS!"
It made us feel good knowing a lot of people were backing our team.

Still raining, so we got the bus back to the hotel.

We stopped in the lobby bar where there was an excellent singer.

He sang songs from the 50's and 60's ... Mustang Sally, Chantilly Lace, etc.
People were dancing and singing along, and it was a fun way to end the evening.

We were exhausted and went to bed at 10:30.

Tomorrow ... EPCOT, in the rain!

DAY TWO - SATURDAY

We were up at 6 a.m.

Got ready for the day, and went to breakfast.
The best thing we ate at the hotel was ... THE MICKEY WAFFLE!

128766627.jpg

I had checked out a few Disney boards before our trip, and people raved about the beignets
at the French Quarter. I ordered a few one morning, they tasted like a dough ball rolled in
powdered sugar ... awful! :sad2:

After breakfast we got the bus to EPCOT.
I was quite surprised that there were no lines, and we were able to walk right in.

I LOVE this picture, because I asked the birds to pose on the railing for me,
and they all cooperated!

128809112.jpg

First we headed to The Land, where the new attraction is SOARIN.
You sit in a seat and the floor drops, and you feel like you're hang gliding over the California coast.

The view is spectacular! :thumbsup2

You fly over Malibu, the wine country, beautiful snow covered mountains, a golf course, etc.,
ending with DisneyLand at night complete with fireworks and Tinkerbell.

It was so amazing that we rode it again.

The first week in February is a great time to go to Disney World, the occupancy is very low.

We never waited more than 5 or 10 minutes for any ride, except for Big Thunder Mountain,
and that line was only 20 minutes.

Of course, it was still raining, so that may have kept the crowds down.

After Soarin we went to see The Circle of Life.

Is anything cuter than the Lion King? I think not!

We started walking toward the World Showcase ...

128947012.jpg

One of the many tips that Tricia gave me was to call ahead for meal reservations.

So I did, and we had lunch reservations at the San Angel Inn at the Mexican pavillion ...
being Mexico addicts, where else would we eat?

We all know what this is ...

128809127.jpg

Mi esposo loco ...

128950782.jpg

"No, Norb, you are not buying a sombrero!"

Some of the lovely (and expensive) Animales Fantasticos, wood carvings of Oaxaca ...

128809126.jpg

And, of course, margaritas ...

128809123.jpg

We enjoyed our lunch, chips & salsa, tortilla soup and Tacos Al Pastor.
There was also a mariachi band.

Then we rode the boat through Mexico.

After the boat ride, we walked to Norway ...

128809118.jpg

and we rode the Maelstrom, a boat trip through the Viking era.

Norb liked the shops here, as you can see ...

129018629.jpg

Next we headed to China ...

128809120.jpg

We watched a film about China, with stunning pictures.

Finally, the sun came out! :sunny:

128955590.jpg

Next was Germany, where you could get a German beer for $7.50 a glass, since neither
one of us are beer afficionados, we decided against paying that.

We were going to do the wine tasting in the German pavillion,
but there were too many people in line, and only one girl working there, and she seemed frazzled.

Next was Italy, then to the USA pavillion, where we watched the American Adventure.

129033594.jpg

On to Japan, and beautiful parasols, ala memoirs of a geisha ...

128809113.jpg

By the time we walked 37 miles to this side of the World Showcase we were getting tired,
and I didn't take many more pictures, or notes.

Norb enjoyed watching this belly dancer in Morocco ...

129018631.jpg

France was next, then the United Kingdom. A lovely pub ...

128947008.jpg

Next was Canada ...

128809104.jpg

We had dinner reservations at Le Cellier in the Canadian pavillion.
The restaurant was nice inside, with a friendly staff.

We started with a Pinot Grigio, and then breadsticks and cheddar cheese soup, the soup was delicious!
We ordered N.Y. strip steaks, which were just okay.

The gardens at the Canadian pavillion were beautiful ...

128955598.jpg

After dinner we went to The Living Seas, and watched a very cute show, Turtle Talk.

Then we rode Spaceship Earth.

Back to the hotel on the bus, with a stop at the lobby bar to rest our feet and have a few drinks before heading to our room.

We love EPCOT, there's so much to see and do.

Tomorrow ... SUPER BOWL SUNDAY ... YAHOO!!!

SUPER BOWL SUNDAY - DAY 3

We woke up early, and got ready for the day.

We put on our STEELER jerseys!
It's SUPER BOWL SUNDAY, and we are soooo excited!

We went to the restaurant, and just had a very light breakfast.
I had a banana and coffee, and Norb got a cinnamon bun and coffee.

We're still thinking about where we will watch the game.
We heard that people were lining up at ESPN at 9 a.m.!
NO WAY are we doing that!

We took a little walk around the hotel, although it was chilly,
we were happy that it stopped raining ...

128955596.jpg

Norb's ready for the big game ...

128766603.jpg

Another view of the pool ...

129033589.jpg

The gardens are lovely ...

128955591.jpg

The French Quarter is on the Sassagoula River ...

128955594.jpg

I was going to title my report
NORB TRIES ON HATS ...

128947011.jpg

do you like this one?

128766657.jpg

I prefer this one ...

128766649.jpg

how about this one?

128766654.jpg

ooh, a birthday hat ...

128766640.jpg

this one is magical ...

128766644.jpg

Aren't ya tired of looking at Norb?

I KNOW I AM!

So ... here's one of ME ...

128947009.jpg

awwwww, the bride Minnie ears, goes so well with the Jerome Bettis football jersey,
don't ya think? ...

129041181.jpg

After about an hour of trying on hats, we were politely asked to leave the store,
and told never to come back. :sad2:

I'm just stalling, because I don't remember what we did all morning.

We took a bus to Downtown Disney again, and went shopping.

Can you find me in this picture?

Not Where's Waldo, but Where's the Steeler Fan?

129033581.jpg

Lots of stores ...

129033570.jpg

Soda fountain and chocolate store ...

129033563.jpg

We bought our grandson a Mr. Potato Head with lots of Disney accessories ...

129013422.jpg

and we had a great lunch at the Rainforest Cafe.

I'll have a mudslide, please ...

129033575.jpg

We stuffed ourselves with ribs ... yum!

Enough shopping, let's go back to the hotel.

In the lobby bar they were setting up more t.v.s, so we decided to get a good seat, and just stay here.

It was 3:30, and we picked our table right up front.
Another family from Pittsburgh arrived, and sat next to us.
We all spread out our Terrible Towels, and settled in for the pre-game shows.

By the time the game started, the bar was packed with people.

We had a great time, drinking and snacking and cheering.

We all loved the commercial of the Steelers practicing saying, "I'm going to Disney World",
then the whole bar would yell, "I'm AT Disney World!" :rotfl:

Well, in case you haven't heard, our Steelers WON the SUPER BOWL!!!

Could we be any happier? I THINK NOT!!!

TOMORROW ... THE MGM STUDIO!

I'm loving your report. Can't wait to finish reading the rest of it. I just LOVE the pic's with yall trying the hats on..sooo funny!

Pgh Janie- loved your report and the pics. Looks like you guys had a really great time. Thanks!
All goes to show a picture is worth a 1000 words!

The people on this board are sooooooo sweet!
Thank you for all of your kind comments!

MGM STUDIOS - DAY 4

Woke up and got ready to start the day.

Had a light breakfast, yogurt, banana and coffee, and headed to the bus stop.

130659861.jpg

We arrived at MGM Studio ...

129041163.jpg

Headed to the Twilight Zone Tower Of Terror ...

129381176.jpg

Inside the "hotel" ... spooky ...

129033539.jpg

It was so much fun that we rode it again!

Next we headed to the Great Movie Ride ...

You ride through soundstage sets of Casablanca, The Wizard of Oz, Aliens, etc.
No flash photography allowed.

Then the Backlot Tour ...

Here you see how they do special effects, the props, costumes, etc.
You ride through a thunderstorm, earthquake, fire and flood,
You see some sets, such as the streets of New York ...

129033498.jpg

We went to see Lights! Motors! Action! Extreme Stunt Show.

Cars and motorcylces in chases, stunts, fires, explosions ... very exciting!

We saw the Muppet 3D Vision ... so darn cute!

And then we went to play Who Wants to be a Millionaire.

129033525.jpg

Every seat has a keypad, so everyone has an equal chance of competing.

The host told us that a 2 year old won the fastest finger once, because he was just pushing the buttons randomly!

If you would win the Grand Prize, you don't get a million dollars, but you could win a Disney cruise.

Unfortunately, we were too slow, and we didn't get into the hot seat.

The people who did get into the hot seat answered a few questions correctly,
but unfortunately, they didn't go too far.
What were the prizes? ... what else? ... a hat!

We had dinner reservations at the Brown Derby.

129033523.jpg

Very old Hollywood, with pictures of the stars all over the walls ...

129033512.jpg

We had a delicous meal and friendly service.
We had drinks, and appetizers of scallops and crabcakes.

For entrees we had salmon and grouper, and for dessert, cheesecake and the Happiest Celebration on Earth, a chocolate delight!

Probably the best meal in The World!
I mean Disney World.

129033505.jpg

The meal was close to $100.00, not including the tip, but that included reserved seat tickets
to the show this evening, Fantasmic!

FANTASMIC WAS FANTASTIC! Lots of lasers and music and special effects and Disney characters ... very enjoyable!

After the show we went back to the hotel, stopped in the lobby bar for a few drinks, and hit the sack!

All of this fresh air and cool weather really makes ya tired.

Tomorrow ... THE MAGIC KINGDOM!

128774490.jpg

I'm just loving your trip report. I loved the hat pictures :rotfl2: ! We did alot of hat pictures when we were down last Sept. I actually read this as a tip on the DIS boards that rather than trying to decide on just one hat to purchase, I took pictures of my DS and his GF trying on the various hats from the normal ears to the funniest ones (including a beret in Paris and a beaded hat in Morocco!) We had the best fun with it!!

Can't wait to hear more.

I agree the hats were great! I'm enjoying reading your report... can't wait for the next installment!

Your pictures are great. I am in the market for a new camera and was wondering what kind you have. The one with the birds and the Epcot ball in the background is a terrific picture.

Loving your report, I am glad you decided to write it! And the pics of Norb are great! Disney should pick him up and put him in an ad campaign! The pic of him in the Goofy hat just had me grinning ear to ear! You two sound like fun! More please!

Allyson
