Hello! We have just found out that we will be relocating to the San Antonio area next year sometime. I have plenty of time to start researching the area but would love some advice from locals! We will be buying a house and will then have 3 school age DD's (elementary) who love to dance, play soccer and swim. Any info and advice will be much appreciated!

Right now we are in northern MN, so this will be a huge change for us! Thanks in advance for your help and input!!!

We moved to San Antonio a little over three years ago for my husband's work from Pittsburgh Pennsylvannia....and its the best thing we ever did!!! We chose to move to Schertz (rated the #1 place to live in Texas and #40 in the country!) @20 minutes northeast of San Antonio. Everyone is very friendly! Theres tons of new construction going on here despite the economy in the rest of the country. So much to do, see, eat....combined with the pleasant weather year round, we feel like we are on a perpetual vacation! Sea World, Fiesta Texas, Riverwalk, Schlitterban Water Park (in New Braunfels,) @2 hours from the beach in Corpus (we prefer to go to the North Padre Island National Seashore) South Padre Island is @6 hours away, Hill Country (shops, wineries, resturants...) Lots of military families (Randolph and Lackland Air Force bases, Fort Sam Houston Army base.) It gets very hot but everything is air conditioned. Our 10 yo son has played SAYSAT (San Antonio Youth Soccer Association) soccer and BVYA (Buffalo Valley Youth Athletics) baseball. He goes to our local public school. Other towns to consider are Cibolo, New Braunfels. Stone Oak area (within San Antonio city limits) is very nice but very crowded and congested, lots of traffic. Let me know if you have any questions! :goodvibes

I'm about 3 1/2- 4 hours south of San Antonio. I have to tell you... San Antonio is one of my favorite places in the world. It's a beautiful city with so much culture and history. The Hill Country is beautiful. There are great antique shops in Gruene (a bit north of SA) You have the best water park just a little drive north into New Braunfels. There is great shopping... especially if you drive up to San Marcos. There are great outlets there.

San Antonio is home of the San Antonio Spurs!!! You've got the Alamo!!!!!! Fiesta Texas. Sea World.

If you drive south into McAllen you'll have easy access to Mexico... and South Padre Island is just a hop skip and a jump away.

I hope you'll fall in love with San Antonio.

Thanks, MightyMom! We have wanyed to get there for a while, so we are excited! My husband is military and is deploying. He will be stationed at Sam Houston upon his return. I am toying with the idea of moving before he gets back, avoiding a mid-school year move and another Minnesota winter! I might be there sooner than I thought!

My sister's husband is active military as well. They are stationed in Washington state. He was deployed all last year.... so my sister moved to San Antonio while he was gone. They don't have children. She put all their stuff in storage and moved to San Antonio for the 10 + months he was gone.

It was great for her because she loves San Antonio.... she was able to get a part time job with an old employeer..... and she was closer to me!

She's back in Washington now. At Easter I sent her a picture of me and the kids. We were in shorts and flip flops and she was so upset because it was so cold in Washington!

It might take you a while to get used to the heat.... but everywhere you turn you'll find central air conditioning! Besides... the heat will prepare you for disney vacations. ;)

Since we know where we are going after the deployment, I would love to go ahead and move. However, I think I am going to keep the kids in school here for one more year. I will probably move next summer sometime since the deployment ends mid shool year (2009-2010) and I don't want to move the girls then. I think then it will be better to move and get settled in and wait for Daddy to get back. Who knows, I could change my mind... I have been reading about all the great things to do in San Antonio on the thread on the Budget Board and it is very tempting!!!

oh you are so lucky. I would love love love to move to San ANtonio. Beautiful city, wonderful people, lots of things to do, and close to other places as well. We're 2 hours south and go there monthly to shop,etc... we love to transfer there but unfortunately with my husbands job, transfers are based on need and seniority and there's an avg of 7 year wait:( good luck you'll love it!

Hi! I can help with some things. PM me if you like with any questions. I am married to a soldier stationed at Fort Sam. I also have 2 girls that dance. When it comes to moving don't forget that there will be a HUGE influx of people due to BRAC over the next few years. Its going to get crowded here!! We have enjoyed San Antonio for 3 years now. We are on our way out of here next month.

Just saw that your DDs like to swim. I can help with that too!

I will PM you... I had not thought about BRAC. Housing market might be better for buyers now than next summer. Another thing to consider! Thanks for the info!

I'm about 15 minutes north of SA too. I agree that the New Branfels area is wonderful I didn't realize how much the Schertz had built up when we relocated or I might have chosen there too!
My girls dance, I can help you with that...
