Anyone in here decorate cakes?

how does everyone like the wilton classes? i've been wanting to take one forever.

i've only made one cake before that had a theme to it. my boyfriend's birthday cake last year. he's a huge hockey (go bruins!) fan and i kind of tweaked a cake that i saw in family fun magazine to make what i wanted. there are so many things i would do differently the next time i make something like this again. i really had a good time making this though.

we had friends over to have the cake and they were all surprised how good the jello actually tasted with the cake.

So, finally here is the completed cake. It took 28 hours to complete and was a full sheet, 1/2 yellow and 1/2 chocolate. It was 30 inches long and about 20 wide. The golfer figurine was about 5 inches tall. The small blue house at the pin is our agency logo....a house cut to look like a puzzle piece. The puzzle piece has become the symbol for autism. Everything was edible on the cake, except the support dowels inside the trees. The pine trees were covered in panko bread crumbs and the trees in cornflakes dyed autumn colors.

Your golfer looks really good!

I loved Wilton; that's how I (and this thread) started, by wondering if anyone had taken the classes. This week I got promoted to Mgr in my bakery so I'd say they are GREAT! You had some good ideas in your cake, you should take the class!

I haven't read this enormous thread completely. Please forgive me if someone has already shared this link.

This blog features cakes gone terribly wrong. It is hilarious and one of my favorite blogs. Enjoy!

:)

It's been posted but that doesn't matter, pull up a keyboard a chat awhile!

Thanks everyone! T

The golfer was a real challenge, and took several tries before I got it to work. The legs are one piece with dowel rods running through them. The same dowel rods support his torso. there is a thin piece of wire running through his arms that are also one piece. His arms were bent into position while the fondant was still soft, and I built a support to hold them in place while he dried. His shirt is a separate piece cut to shape, and the collar hides the hole where it goes through the dowel rods. His neck is a separate piece and lastly his head is also. One of the dowels that runs completely through his body holds his head in place.

I could not get hair to look good. That I still need to work on. The hat was a necessity to hide his bald head! Note to self....put the eyes and eyebrows on before putting on the hat. It made making the eyebrows much harder as I nicked one of the white eyeballs with the brown food dye that I used for the eyebrows. He then needed "eye surgery" to replace that eye. All in all I am very pleased with my first attempt at creating a figure. I am making a dummy cake today so I can keep him standing!

By the way.....I just sent in my application for the National Gingerbread competition at the Grove Park Inn here in Asheville. I am still awaiting my confirmation number, and hopefully I will get in.

I spent some time...ok, WAY too long, reading this thread yesterday and you all have inspired me! Wow, you do not make cakes, these are works of art. I have a DD 12 that I think would love taking the Wilton classes with me. I mentioned it yesterday and she was thrilled.

The classes are offered at a Michaels near us for $17.50 pp. Approximately how much were the supplies for the 1st set of classes and is there anything we could share if we are doing this together.

Thanks so much!!

Wilton is such a great parent/child activity, mine wasn't old enough at the time but now she loves decorating (when I have time to do it at home which, sadly, is NOT enough). It will be fun!

Here, you have to buy the kit to start (I think it was $20 but I used the coupons they print all the time to make it cheaper). Not to scare you off, but I spent well over $100 with the first class. The other two were cheaper, but I also over-bought a BUNCH of stuff I didn't need. I'm sure using the coupons you could do it for less than $50 and probably even much cheaper than that. You will be able to share almost everything but be prepared to bake a LOT of practice cakes for two. But hey, isn't that what kids are for? :haha

I think Cake Decorating is like scrapbooking, you can do a lot with a little but once you start buying the toys...:rolleyes1

Good luck, have fun and stick with us!!!

I TOTALLY agree. When I first started I thought to myself....is all this STUFF really necessary??? Now that I have a few under my belt, I walk into Michaels or AC Moore and think to myself...I need that, and that, and so on. It is wonderfully addicting, and oh so satisfying.

My biggest problem though is that my creations get eaten!! It is so emotionally difficult to watch one of my cakes getting cut into.

One of these days I should break down and actually take the Wilton classes. It might help me with my piping and buttercream skills.

Haunted Mansion Cake - Phase 1

I'm having a Halloween Party so I'm doing a Haunted Mansion cake for it. It is actually a dummy and I will serve a sheet cake. I'm hoping to enter it in an upcoming competition if it turns out as I have planned.

hmcake-phase1.jpg

Here is phase 1. I'm really happy with the detail so far and I hope the rest follows suit. Next phase will be the stretching room. I won't be able to get every scene on the cake so I've chosen some key scenes. It will be 3 tiers and will wrap around to the top with the top front being building facade with the chess pieces surrounding the top tier. It is 14", 10", 6".

So far, fondant and painted with food coloring & vodka.

Looks great! I like the painting. It adds a different kind of detail that just can't be achieved any other way.

I can't wait to see the rest of the cake!

has anyone done a circus cake? I want to make one for my son's first bday and would love to see/have some suggestions- thanks!

Got phase 2 done today, the stretching room. The gargoyles were tough.

hmcake-phase2.jpg

Eeeek! There is a LOT left to do but it is so cool that it is coming together. Staring at the pic I see I need to do some touch up painting too.
