Great Cakes! I LOVe your kitty on the yarnball:) And your Pooh one is so cute!!!

thanx, but the cat one was a pain in the butt to make because i had to roll all those strings out by hand, if i ever make one of those again i'm buying a clay extruder.

The non profit agency I work for is having a golf tournament next week. I was recruited to make the cake for the after-party!!!

So, this weekend I start work on the golfer figure, trees and several other 3 dimensional components for the cake.

The cake will be covered in fondant. What do you experts think I should use for the sand traps? I was thinking about using crushed vanilla cookies. For the water traps I am just going to use blue frosting. I am not brave enough to use sugar....that is just beyond me.

For the trees, which are beginning to show their beautiful fall colors...I am going to cover in crushed cereal colored to look like autumn leaves.

What do you think? Of course pictures will be posted after the cake is done.

Sounds great Linda!!

I've got new cutters in the shape of apples, pumpkins and fall leaves, I've been aching to use! I need to make some fondant:)

for sand i've heard people use crushed gram crackers, crushed nilla waffers, or brown sugar for the water you can add piping gel on to of the frosting to give a glossy look

Piping Gel to make the water shiny!!!! What a great idea. This board is fantastic!!

Tonite I started the figure of the golfer. I have the pants and shoes done, and the dowel inserted for support. It is now stuck in a block of foam drying a bit.

I also experimented with various food items, cereal, oatmeal and panko bread crumbs to get the proper consistency for the pine trees. I decided that the panko worked best and now have several small pine trees drying in the foam.

Tomorrow I am going to try making several autumn leaf colors and letting them dry completely. Then I will mix together to see if I can simulate the look of a tree in autumn. I will also begin work on the top half of the figure.

The actual cake should be a piece of cake....no pun intended. I have my 3 colors of green selected for the course and now just have to decide on the perfect shade of blue for the water hazard.

So far so good....let's hope that the rest of the process goes smoothly.

I am a bit concerned about delivery. The golf course is called "High Vista" for a reason, and the cake needs to be transported to the clubhouse at the very top of the ridge. Lisa is going to drive me so I can make sure that the cake stays level and does not slide.

I will keep you posted.

can't wait to see a pic!

So, the golfer is done!!!! He still needs facial features, but I am waiting until I know for sure that they will be right. I have to do some more practicing.

My trees are ready to have the leaves put on, and the cereal is all colored and dried. I will do those tomorrow after the gum paste base has hardened just a bit.

The golfer turned out really cute. He is 6 inches tall....way out of scale for the rest of the cake, but who really cares?? This is about learning as much as making a fun cake. His arms are a tad too long and too thick, but he still looks pretty darn good. My favorite part is his red cap, which even has little lines in it just like a real cap.

Now, a question. I am going to try to make marshmallow fondant for the first time. The cake will be delivered and eaten on Thursday and I will be doing the baking and decorating on Wednesday. I have to work late on Tuesday. Would it be okay to make the fondant on Monday or should I make it Wednesday morning?

WOW!

No good cakes from me lately, but some good news - I got promoted at work and am now the Bakery Manager! Over the last year and a half that we've been kicking around this thread, ya'll have helped inspire and encourage me thru caking to baking to managing a bakery at last. So, here's a special thanks to everyone that's posted in this thread.

:thanks:

My cake is almost finished!!!! I will do the final decoration on site tomorrow, so as not to damage the cake in transport.

I made my own marshmallow fondant and it was a success!!! It did get a little stiff as I was adding the color. I had to add so much color to get the dark green for the grass that I wanted. Next time I think I may add the color as I am mixing it to prevent overworking the fondant. It did roll out very easily and was much easier to mold and smooth on to the cake. Another plus....it tastes great!!!!!

All in all, I think it turned out as good as it could have. Pictures will be posted tomorrow night after I get home from the event.

So, finally here is the completed cake. It took 28 hours to complete and was a full sheet, 1/2 yellow and 1/2 chocolate. It was 30 inches long and about 20 wide. The golfer figurine was about 5 inches tall. The small blue house at the pin is our agency logo....a house cut to look like a puzzle piece. The puzzle piece has become the symbol for autism. Everything was edible on the cake, except the support dowels inside the trees. The pine trees were covered in panko bread crumbs and the trees in cornflakes dyed autumn colors.
