anyone hire a private driver in cozumel? thru dcl or privately?

We did not hire a driver but we did rent a jeep and drove that around the island for the day. Much cheaper than hiring a driver and not difficult to get around that island at all.

DW and I rented a jeep and went out on our own. You can get away to some of the out-of-the-way places and just do what you want. If, you speak Spanish, DW is fluent, it helps as the locals will treat you special and they gave us multiple recommendations/tips/discounts/etc.

we rented a jeep the last time we visited and went all over - this time we are a party of 6 and would have to rent two more than likely. 1/2 want to zipline and 1/2 want to beach it.

We used Plaza Tours, They were very reasonably priced, the driver was super friendly and we did things on the fly. When my parent pooped out halfway through we dropped them off at the pier and kept going ourselves. They were very prompt about meeting us and the directions to find them was spot on. The service they provided us was excellent which is probably one of the reasons they are top rated on Trip Advisor. If you are looking for a private tour where you get to pick what you do they are an excellent option.

We rented a van with driver through Disney (4 hours, party of 9). The driver was great and only started the clock when we actually began the tour. The van was very well maintained. He listened to our requests (i.e. no ruins or churches, but stops at nice beaches) and didn't force us to stop as his uncle's souveneir shop or something like that. Everyone had a great time and it was nice being back on the ship by 1 pm. Last year, we took the ferry to the mainland, and it was a relief not having to worry about that long, rocky ride this time. I would rent van plus driver through Disney again: it is probably more expensive, but the peace of mind makes it worth it to me.

We did Plaza Tours also in October. We had Gerry as our driver and we had a great day. Highly recommend.

We go yearly to Cozumel. We have hired a taxi driver to drive us around for 4-5 hours and we have rented a jeep both. We liked both experiences. IF you plan to do any drinking on the East side then I HIGHLY recommend hiring a taxi driver to stay with you.
